Please tell me about your 18th birthday? Thoughts and ideas appreciated!

Question Posted Thursday June 9 2011, 1:45 am

Hi.
Sorry if it's kind of long but PLEASE bear with me!:(

My name's Kitty, I'm 17 and I'll be turning 18 in more or less six/seven months (so that's January) and I really really need your help coming up with ideas on how to celebrate it.

I thought about having a party but then my mom started talking about all the disadvantages (i.e. what if some of my friends don't show up, etc.). That kind of discouraged me, but then I thought about it. I already had a sweet 16, so probably the only difference my 18th birthday party will have is that it'll be bigger and my college friends will be invited.

But I don't like the people in college that much. I feel like only my high school friends are worth throwing a party for (if ever).

So, I considered traveling abroad for my birthday but school already starts on January 4 and my birthday's on the ninth. I wanted to go someplace really far but it'd be a hassle because of the jetlag and missing school.

So basically, I'm considering other options! Going out with my family is nice but I really wanna do something cool (maybe with friends) for my birthday.

Any ideas? Your replies will be really appreciated. Tell me about what you guys did for your 18th! It doesn't have to be your ideas, you can talk about a cool 18th birthday celebration you went to and share about it or something. Haha.

Please help! Thanks in advance!<3

xoxo
Kitty

Celebrate your 18th birthday by registering to vote. Doesn't sound like a big charge, but it does give you a small say in how this society operates for the first time in your life. That, for me, beats the hell out of any party.

After that, wait until you turn 21. Then you can REALLY party and legally at that. Plus you will be, or almost be, finished with college and you will know more about yourself and what you really want out of life.

Oh girl.. if you had the chance to travel abroad for your birthday.. TAKE IT!!! who cares about jet leg or missing school..? are you honestly telling me that you would pass this great opportunity?? If you ask most people what they want to do, they'll most likely say travel the world. You're young and you have that opportunity at your hands.. take it!! I know if I was in your shoes, then I would definitely pick traveling abroad over some silly party. Oh and my personal experience with parties is horrible. Everytime I throw a party there's always some disaster. My new years eve party.. only 2 people showed up. my 16th birthday party, my parents had to "chaperone" and it was completely lame. Some other party I had, the food was bad and everyone got sick afterwards. I just have a bad experience with parties, but if you feel confident to throw one, then go for it.

I don't know where you are but in the UK turning 18 is a really big deal, much more so than 16 or 21 so I've been to my fair share of 18th birthday parties.

On my actual 18th birthday I had swine flu so the plans I had made to go to a bar with my friends (you can drink at 18 in the UK) went awry.

My 'official' celebration was a big party at my house. I have a really big kitchen with doors that open into the garden so we hired scaffolding and set up a big canopy over the patio with lots of fairy lights. We also hired a huge barbecue and an outdoor heater. It was October but the heater kept things really warm and people spent alot of time outside under the canopy.

In the kitchen, we had more fairy lights and we hired a big drinks fridge and stocked it with beer, spirits and soft drinks. A few of my friends are in a band so we set up amps, speakers etc at one end of the kitchen and they played a 45-minute set and everyone came in to watch. At the end of their set they played a song they had written for me and my best friend and her cousin joined them on their violins. The rest of the time we just had iPod speakers. We ordered a big cake from a patisserie and after the band played it was 'presented' to me by my parents and everyone sang happy birthday to me. I made a quick speech and thanked everyone and my best friend also made a speech.

For food, we cooked loads of sausages and burgers outside on the barbecue and people ate them in buns with salad. We set up a table next to the barbecue with bowls of salad, paper plates, condiments etc so people could help themselves. People could sit/stand talking outside or in part of the kitchen or dance. There was a mix of my friends and family so it was all very civilised and not at all like a rowdy teenage party. It was a very special night.

My best friend also had a big 18th birthday celebration. She hired out a church hall and had a curry night. It was formal dress and there was a champagne reception. When it was time to eat, we all moved into the next room where there were lots of tables set up. There was a proper seating plan and place names and there were about 3 bottles of wine per table. Her parents had done all the cooking themelves and we went up table by table to get served our food. There were several dishes to choose from so we picked up our bowls and chose what we wanted. After the main course there was also a choice of desserts. There was a big cake which was surrounded by lots of red velvet cupcakes, it was really cool.

After the food there were a few different performances and speeches. Several of our friends sang or played an instrument and I made a speech, along with my best friend and her dad.

Most of my friends had much smaller 18th birthday celebrations. Alot of them just went out for a meal or drinks, or had a small gathering at their house before we went out clubbing or something.

It doesn't matter what you do or how big it is or whatever, the main thing is that you celebrate with people you care about. My best friend and I both had big parties but they would still have been awful if all our friends hadn't been there.
