Introduce the title, the author, and the theme. Give a summary of the book in 2 sentences.
Describe the characters and their development and style in the story.
Give your judgement about the theme.
Close with your overall opinion of the book.
And offer examples and quotes.

Go to a college library and look up the academic critiques for the piece you are assigned. That might help spark something in your mind to write about. Plus you will learn something about literary criticism.

Could you elaborate a little?

What kind of text are you responding to (play/novel/poem)? What is it? What is the question asking of you? What form do you have to write the response in (short answer, essay, creative writing)?
