Heroin and cigarettes are both alike in that there is a point at which you stop enjoying it or getting a reaction out of it and use it just to avoid severe withdrawal symptoms (though those affiliated with heroin are far more severe).

I will admit that the drug war is completely counterproductive, hypocritical and even has a racist background in part (cocaine was outlawed because people were afraid that hopped up black guys would rape all the white women and pot was made illegal because people were afraid Mexicans would get high and rape all the white women---yes, this is actually true and it's weird how the go to meme white guys in power had was visions of minorities raping caucasian girls).

But there is a continuum of effects on the body and brain and while pot, for example, is largely innocuous (I am a former smoker of it myself), I have also known a lot of drug addicts in my life and heroin just makes you pathetic and because it is illegal it causes criminality due to the high street prices (if it were treated as a medical problem, as in Portugal, use of it would decline, btw).

The biggest problem with drugs is actually grandstanding politicians. Man has always gotten high as long as he has trod the planet and refusal to recognize that has only lead to perpetually lucrative paydays for organized crime. As we have found out with alcohol, cigarettes and gambling, it is better to try to manage hedonism than suppress it.

Woah woah woah...cigarettes and heroin are 2 different things when it comes to how dangerous they are. Cigarettes can be harmful to you, especially in the long run, but heroin just screws you up. Not only does it basically destroy your brain, when you're high on heroin you do things you wouldn't normally do and that could be hurting somebody else. Personally I'd stay away from both, as they are both pretty disgusting, but heroin is just insanely bad for you...

Hi, I am old enough to be your grandfather and hopefully the wisdom of my age will be helpful.

I am also a member of a volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad. In all the time I have been a member I have never responded to, or read a report of, a vehicle accident where the cause has been the drivers have been high on cigarettes. Yes cigarettes are additives but they are not a mind altering drug.

I have responded to numerous accidents where alcohol was deemed to be the cause or contributing factor of the accident. All to often in these accident we have to dig one or more dead people out of the car. Sure we don't know who these people are and you would think it was just part of the job and it doesn't bother us. It does bother us, it hurts to see what was just moments ago healthy bodies torn apart for no reason than someone thought he/she was sober enough to drive.

Alcohol is a mind altering substance and while I am not calling for the 18th Amendment to be reinstated I will support mandatory ignition lockout breathalyzers for cars in the future.

Pot, Heroin and other drugs are mind altering substances. Street grade drugs are also extremely unsafe as they are uncontrolled and the user has no idea of what they are buying. As a rescue squad member we see our share of overdose victims. Thank god for Narracan, we now have a method to save some of these victims.

There is good evidence in support of legalizing certain drugs such as pot and heroin. The biggest obstacle to doing so is the addictiveness. Alcohol is only addictive to a limited few and is now viewed more as a illness than an addiction. Pot and Heroin addiction will probabaly never gain that respect in the medical community and therefore never be legalized.

I don't care for the cigarettes / heroin comparison; heroin is seriously dangerous and bad.

However, how about this one: why is alcohol - the destroyer of lives and families - legal, but pot isn't. Have you EVER heard of someone getting high and starting a fight, driving his car and killing someone or himself? We hear about drunks doing that and more all day every day...

That's not rhetorical, I know the answer. It's the alcohol lobbyists that pay enough to keep the politicians fat and happy. Let a well-funded pot lobby step up, (well funded enough to pay out more than the booze lobby), and, hey, pot is suddenly legal. Guaranteed.
