I am a body piercer/tattooist.

The itching is quite normal. It is part of the healing process. To prevent infection, it is suggested that you use ear cleaning solution on the piercing 2-3 times daily. Infection is easy to spot as it will swell, and have a greenish+yellowish discharge. If you cannot get the ear cleaning solution, then I always suggest to my clients to use Non-scented (just plain) Dial or Proven soap on the piercing.

1- Take the soap and lather your hands with it.

2- use the lather on your piercing sliding it in and out so to work the soap into the piercing.

3- Most importantly, under running water, repeat the sliding in and out with the piercing to ensure that all soap is then removed from the inside so that the soap does not cause infection (due to it sitting and festering inside of your piercing)

well first of all... you shouldn't have done them yourself.. Thats rule number 1 for piercings. Its more risky to get infections that way. Its better to pay some extra cash for a professional to do it. They can give you the proper tools in order to take care of the piercing. They can give you guidelines on how to take care of it. They can give you more tips etc.

Anyways.. I don't think its infected. YET. it could though. Oh and rule number 2 for piercings is DONT TAKE IT OUT. If you keep on taking it out and then putting it back in, you're basically ripping your skin and nerves, which means it can cause infections..

so from now on, stop taking it out. It will only make it worse.

The pain you're feeling right now is probably because you took it out for a day, and then tried to jam it back in. Taking it out for a day (yes.. even 1 day) can cause the skin to form back together. One time i got a piercing and had to take it out for a soccer game. After the game, I tried to put them back in and it hurt like hell because the holes were already starting to close up. so its very very very important you don't take them out.

make sure you clean the piercing very well. It depends on how concerned you are about the hygiene. There are some people who could care less about their hygiene, so they only clean their piercings once a day or even once a week. When i got my piercing, I was so careful and hygienic, I cleaned them 3 times a day. If you really want to prevent infections, you really need to be responsible for the piercing. Clean it more than you expect you should. Its better to clean it more than you need to, than to not clean it as much and risk infection.

The itching may be an allergic reaction too. This is another reason why you should have gone to a professional... The needle you used, or even the piercing you have right now, could be making you have an allergic reaction. My friend got a piercing and her whole ear was swollen because she found out that she was allergic to nickel (the main ingredient for cheap earrings). Now she can only wear gold or silver earrings.

I'm not sure how young you are. You sound pretty young. Don't take this the wrong way.. but when it comes to piercings, its a very responsible thing. You really need to be mature and responsible enough to take care of it. Its not like a pair of jeans. You can't just wear them out and get a few holes in it and be careless about them.. you really need to take the initiation to take care of it. Maybe you should have thought more about this before doing it yourself...

Itching isn't a sign of infection, redness and puss (if you wake up and there's crusty shit all over it) are a good sign. If that is the case, just take care of it. My ear gauges got infected, I just took extra care cleaning them for a week. Make sure your soap isn't scented, ocean water spray helps, and going to a professional the next time you decide you want a piercing is also the greatest idea I can give you.
