Tips for young writers?

Question Posted Tuesday December 21 2010, 2:45 am

f/16

Writing is my greatest passion, but I just can't think of any inspiration for an original work! I want to get started on a big project and soon, maybe look into the writing world more. Honestly, I never wanted to make a career of it, but it's about the only thing I can do, so are there any tips out there to get out of Writer's Block, maybe get some inspiration back? Any information on publishing and editors would be great too!

When it comes to writing write about what interests and excites you. It especially helps if that's a topic not many know about. Try and make it your niche or your beat like most journalists do.

If you are writing about anything you aren't in tune with or interested in naturally you will have problems writing. The same thing goes double with writing out of obligation or sense that you must. Don't get into that trap.

You don't have to write daily either and in fact it's better that you don't. Sometimes you need a break from it only to return when ready. That's normal.

I assume you know or have been told you have talent in this area. Let's face it a lot of people can't write worth beans and that's why authors are so revered as are great journalists.

If you know you can write like a pro try volunteering as a non-paid intern writing stories and doing pictures for a local paper (the one with fliers that comes weekly). That's what I did.

Also take all the english courses you can and when the time comes to apply to college (go to college first over university) get into a hands on journalism program where you write for a newspaper and produce one.

University is all theory and no hands on experiences or clippings come from it. That's why you need community college first. I've been where you are at now so this advice comes from experience in the field.

Write every single day and don't worry what you're writing about. Keep a daily journal, grocery list or a list of future life goals. Do a quick search online for "writing prompts", this search yields many writing idea websites. Get a copy of "The Pocket Idiot's Guide to Beating Writer's Block" ($9.95, but I got mine at Half Price Books for $3.98). This little gem has tons of ideas, tips, advice and writing exercises. "The Pocket Muse" is another good book to refer to. Keep a little notebook with you at all times. You never know when an idea or observation will hit you. Hope some of this helps! Good luck!

Every writer will experience a block repeatedly. All creators do :) and all have different techniques that nudge them along which they learn over time.
Personally, I just start writing about nothing, literally. Anything that comes to mind and that will usually get me moving in the right direction to continue my work. Hope this helps you.
