We have minimal hardware failures, and those have been with laptops that were dropped or left in the cold car overnight, brought in and started up without allowing warm up time.
No computer is going to like circumstances such as that, so based on my experience with HP, I would say they'd probably be your best bet.
(I've also built a number of computers with Asus motherboards that are still going strong, but don't have any experience with their computers.)
I'm not sure what you're looking to do with the laptop, but the business models are inclined to be a bit more "rugged" with the expectation of them being used in travel and such.
On the flip side of this coin, however, the business models may not have 'home' options such as built-in webcams and that type of thing. You'd really have to do a comparison of their models to see what works for you.

This is the laptop I got for work recently: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
I definitely feel like I got my money's worth, and you can customize it a bit if there is something else you want. There is a webcam, but I haven't used it yet so not sure about the quality. Some general advice though, RAM is the most important spec, get 3 gigs at the very least, 4 if you can. Hard drive space is the least important, because it is the easiest thing to upgrade.
Also, this site: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
has lots of nice coupons and discounts, the ones for HP tend to be particularly good, if you are willing to wait for a few days for a good coupon to come up, you can save upwards of $300 and get a much better laptop for your budget of $450.

The thing is, you usually pay for what you get. And if you're going to be making a purchase on a big item that will PROBABLY run into problems at some point, you'll HAVE to buy a warranty. They don't make you buy it, but it's recommended. I think my dad paid an extra $300 or so for full coverage on my laptop.
One day I was walking back into my dorm room with book stacked and my laptop on top. It slipped and it starting acting funny. I brought it to Best Buy, where I originally bought it and they sent it to Sony and it got repaired. It ended up being a repair that would have cost me well over $500. So I was grateful I got the warranty. [ leLovely's advice column | Ask leLovely A Question ]
