Staying committed to a diet

Question Posted Sunday December 19 2010, 12:30 pm

Hello im 19/f and im a healthy weight and height for my age. I want to start eating healthy and stay away from fatty foods. I have problems with buying junk food or microwavable food because its quick and easy. After the holidays im gonna get a membership at the YMCA and start working out.. but i think i need a push on that one too because i hate working out. Everybody has told me bring a friend to help encourage me but all my friends work 40 hours a week and never seem to have time. I also have a problem with when im hungry i stop at McDonald or some other fast food place. Its like this overwhelming need to have it. Almost like its an addiction when i get hungry. How can i stop this? I feel good when im eating junk food but once im full i really regret it and the food makes me sick to my stomach and feel like crap. The thing is when i get hungry i dont care if the food will hurt my stomach, i just want to eat it. Also i say i want to stop drinking soda. I tell myself after this 12 pack im gonna not drink it anymore but i find myself buying more and more. Anyways how can i stop all of this? I want to get healthy and start eating right but its hard. Nothing in the healthy part of the store seems to interest me. I tell myself i wont eat that so why should i buy it. I just need help! Any advice on what i should do? Thanks and i do rate

Go high carb, low fat, whole foods, plant-based VEGAN! It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle change. I went vegan this year and have lost 40 pounds, with minimal exercise, and eating AS MUCH as I desire bringing down my BMI from 30 to 24. I weigh less now than I did throughout high school, as an overweight teenager, even when I exercised for hours while on Junior Varsity and Varsity sports teams. I went to my annual physical earlier this month, and even my doctor was in shock.

My goal for next year is to lose 30-40 more pounds, I just need to start exercising on a regular basis. Nothing crazy, just 30-60 minutes of jogging, Ballet Beautiful, bike riding.. things like that.

I think it's amazing what I've accomplished so far, just by changing my diet, though. It's a lot easier to go vegan than it seems. I was never vegetarian, I went from being able to eat an entire box of pizza or entire tub of ice cream in one sitting to a full-fledged vegan. I now spend a lot less money on groceries, have more energy (never need caffeine, and never feel lethargic like I used to on a regular basis), have more concentration, am learning to cook, and etc. Try it for a week, that's how I started, and I felt so good that I just kept going, and it's now been 5 months! You can get every nutrient from plant foods, including protein!

Where do you get your protein?! 10 comebacks from a Vegan.

The only vitamin you need to supplement is B12, and one I personally recommend is Garden of Life's B12 spray (cause I personally hate swallowing pills, and methylcobalamin is better than cyanocobalamin). You can buy it at any health foods store (Whole Foods, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, etc.), or online.

No matter your weight, you are making a great decision to eat healthy and begin a regular fitness routine. Approx. 1 year ago I weighed in at 309 lbs. I am 5'5" since that time I have lost 120 pounds by implementing consistent changes in my lifestyle. Just like any other vice like alcohol or smoking, it is extremely difficult to stop eating fast food, quick snacks and soda. I work in a restaurant and have a very busy life, so fast food was perfect for a quick meal. Here are a few options and suggestions that might help you. Use snack substitutions like mini carrots (no ranch dip) celery, quakes (mini flavored rice cakes) to name a few. Eating at fast food restaurants can actually provide a well balanced meal when chosen correctly. For example, many places offer veggie burger options, with this, make sure to ask for no dressings. Each bun depending on size can have 200-400 calories. Cut that in half by removing half the bun and tossing it. Also, choosing a skinless chicken breast over any red meat will help you immensely. ABSOLUTELY NO FRIED FOODS! Cut that out now and your heart will thank you later. And remember, smaller portions more often. As far as loving your soda goes..... Substitute this with a green tea, this will still give you some caffeine to help with cravings (beware of ready made store bought) make sure to check the labels. Cutting the soda out of your life will be hard for about 7 days, and then all of a sudden, it will taste awful. One more thing, a significant change in your eating habits will cause a significant increase in your energy and mental clarity, this may help you to get to the gym to start up a routine. I have hundreds of food substitution options if you have any questions. Sorry if this answer was too long or skipped around. Good luck and feel free to ask me anything else you want to know.

If none of your real-life friends are really willing to support you through this, have you considered an online support group?

Right now I'm trying to lose weight, and I'm using a website called MyFitnessPal. SparkPeople is also a great site. Both have calorie counters to help you keep track of how many calories you've eaten that day and burned in exercise, forums to help support you in your journey and calculators to help determine what you should be taking in. I find it really helps to have that huge support group every time I have a moment of weakness.

Hey,
Let me start off by saying, I was in the EXACT same position as you. It's basically just the lack of motivation. Literally, thats it. When you're motivated, you become determined! It takes a whole lot of committment. Plus before you start, your key word would be PATIENCE.It does take time. So heres what you got to do, REPLACE your soda with water, or flavoured water. I started off with flavoured water and eventually went to water, it's easier that way! Second, Come to terms with what the consequences will be by eating unhealthy. Put up a picture of someone you look up to and want to be like. It'll be helpful for the motivation. Whenever you get hungry drink water, it fills you're stomach more, or a helpful tip would be go on the "green tea" diet. Basically, drink green tea AS MUCH as you can. Plus it gives you great skin and cleans out you're internal system. You can never have too much of it. It doesnt take the best, but you will get used to it. WILL POWER is what you'll need tto stick to. Do you're best and believe in yourself! P.s try going to the gym during the morning, it's refreshing and will help you control your portions throughout the day.All the best with you're diet, prove to yourself you can do it and say hello to the new and healthy you!
