Tattoo shops are where you would go for piercings. Look in the phone book or on the internet for places in your area. Call them and find out what their age requirements are (some places wont pierce under the age of 18 even with a parent) and find out when the piercer will be there and if you need to make an appointment. Then your set!

Find a local piercing parlor (usually does piercings and tattoos) and call them beforehand about pricing. A navel piercing may cost $20 or more, and you may need to pay additional costs for the autoclaved jewelry.

Ask if the shop has an autoclave, first and foremost. That is how their jewelry is sanitized and it is absolutely necessary. If they don't have one then you do NOT want to go to them.

Come for a visit before the date of the piercing appointment. Check out the set-up. Does it look clean and sterile? Are there separate rooms devoted to piercings versus tattoos? Is there photos available for the piercer's previous work?

Talk with the people in the shop. Ask them how confident they feel about getting this particular piercing done. Ask them to estimate how many piercings the artist has done on the navel.

Look at a few shops, preferably, and pick out the one that seems most friendly and clean. You want them to be very educated about the body, piercings, tattoos, and health so talk about things like the healing process for a belly button piercing. Meet the artists if possible.

During the procedure you should be able to see new packages of needles. They should open the needle right in front of you so that you know you're not getting a secondhand needle (it is VERY important you notice this because many, many low shops try to reuse needles and end up spreading disease).

Talk with your parents about it.

Talk with people who do have piercings already and see if they have recommendations.
