Can you get an STD if you have sex on your period?
Question Posted Wednesday September 22 2010, 6:43 am
I know STDs are obviously diseases and spread through sex. I was wondering if you have sex on your period if you're more prone to getting an STD of some sort? Because obviously there's blood involved and it's coming from you and they say a lot of diseases are bloodborne. I'm not going to have sex on my period though. I'm just curious about it because it makes a lot of sense to me that it would be more dangerous or whatever.

STD's can be very dangerous and unless you are in a serious, long term relationship with a partner who has been tested, you should not be having unprotected sex. STD's are not all treatable some cause more serious illness such as cancer and even death. Pregnancy to a person who has an STD is very serious, not only to the expectant mother but also to the fetus. In severe cases the baby can be born blind, seriously ill, or not at all. So please always use condoms, just the fact that you are asking this question tells me that you are worried about STD's. If you are in a relationship in which STD's are possible ALWAYS play it safe. If your significant other does not respect your wishes, you have to wonder how many others had he been with in an unsafe(unprotected) manner. This is just my advice, the rest is up to you. You will get alot of advice in your life, some you wont even have to ask for, but always remember: you only get one life and one body take care of it. [ Rosey's advice column | Ask Rosey A Question ]

That being said, being on your period does not increase nor decrease your chance of getting an STI. Having open sores, cuts, etc and having unprotected sex however, DOES. It is important to know the sexual history of your partner before you get into any type of sexual situation with them. Be safe :D [ Cherry_Blow_Pop's advice column | Ask Cherry_Blow_Pop A Question ]
Razhie answered Wednesday September 22 2010, 4:50 pm: As others have said, being on your period doesn't affect your risk of catching an STI.
It's true that many STIs are blood born, but there is a difference between having an open sore, and menstruating.
Cuts and sores in your mouth or on your gentiles can put you at greater risk for getting catching an STI, but menstrual blood is really no different as it's being released, then it is while it is lining the walls of the uterus. It doesn't affect THE WOMAN's chances of STI transmission.
However, if the menstruating woman is infected her partners can be at greater risk for her transmitting any STIs to them (depending on the STI she has, it can be present in menstrual blood). [ Razhie's advice column | Ask Razhie A Question ]
