that's what my friends call blood clot. because it looks like strawberry jam. no, but seriously i get it sometimes. but how is it caused and why? does it have anything to do with using tampons ('cause i use them-)? i am 13, usually every time i bleed i get that strawberry jam. is this normal?
Peeps answered Tuesday July 13 2010, 3:58 pm: The blood clots are actually NOT dead skin from the cervix. Not at all.
The lining of your uterus is shed once a month to make sure is healthy and ready for a baby to attach to it if you were to get pregnant. When you are bleeding too heavily or too quickly you body doesn't have much time to break down the chunks of the uterine wall that is coming off.
It's sort of like washing a car. Dirt gets build up on it and you'd like to be shiny and new again. If you don't take the time to scrub it down before rinsing it then sometimes you'll notice big chunks of dirt and debris coming off in the streams of water.
Your body needs to be taken care of so that it can heal up properly and break down things like this.
Increasing the amount of water you drink, exercise you participate in, and taking a regular vitamin each day will help to reduce blood clots during your menstrual flow.
It isn't harmful or dangerous to be experiencing blood clots during your period unless you get lots and lots of them or they are very large in size. If you experience either of those then it's time to see a doctor to find out why you body isn't doing it's job properly.
As for tampons, they are actually extremely harmful to you body. They increase the risk of all sorts of infections, toxic shock syndrome (TSS), and even cancer. They even cause you to lose a little bit of sensation in your vagina itself if you continue to use them each month. Over time, you will notice a decrease amount of sensitivity and may lose the ability altogether to produce the right amount of wetness for sexual play or even become unable to feel sex properly when a penis enters your vagina.
Believe it or not, making a few simple changes in your menstrual product choice can actually make your periods lighter and shorter. I've experienced this myself, first-hand.
I have lots and lots of links to why you should absolutely not use tampons and try to only use pads or try a menstrual cup. Here is some information I've supplied to other Advicenators in my time here on this site:
Why tampons are bad and why they can cause you pain, cancer, and other serious problems:
(It doesn't matter how old or young you are. Menstrual cups are can fit everyone. I have a really, really small vagina and I could fit the DivaCup inside just fine and dandy.)

We don't notice because we shower and clean our skin and so we wash off the old skin. But the only way for the "old skin" on the inside to get out is through your period, which is why you have one. It may feel gross and we all hate getting it, but its actually a cleansing process that is quite necessary for your body to remain healthy. So don't worry about it. You're fine. Its all natural. Good luck! [ dearcandore's advice column | Ask dearcandore A Question ]
