Hey I'm evan. i am 15 years old and have two illnesses im having problems with. i have been diagnosed with pretty serious melanoma skin cancer for the second time which i am going through chemo for. i think i may also have ocd. im not a really a germaphobe - i dont wash my hands all the time or anything but i do have a huge problem with peoples spit and touching anything that goes into my mouth. also when my older brother and i are playing video games and he leaves the case of the game open i feel like i have to shut it or it will keep distracting me. i also cant stand strings on peoples clothes. im def not a neat person. my room is a pit and my locker at school was always a mess. i guess i see certain symptoms of ocd but others are completely not there. i also get on one subject and think about it constantly. for instance if i am watching a movie and my mom asks "what was that actor in?" i cant watch the movie or enjoy it without finding that out first. thanks for your help.

NinjaNeer answered Tuesday June 29 2010, 8:39 am: It's very possible. I have OCD, but things were often untidy for me when I was a teenager. It's not what people think it is, most of the time. I don't wash my hands compulsively or touch things a certain number of times, but I do need to do things in a certain order, can't stand people's breath touching me and need to have things placed on my desk in a certain way, among other things. The thing about OCD is that it's an anxiety disorder. You don't just get distracted... you get seriously uncomfortable and anxious if those conditions can't be fulfilled. For instance, my friends thought it was hilarious to keep moving my dishes at a restaurant (putting them on an angle, adjusting the spacing so it was uneven) to see me freak out. Not cool.
Thing is, you can't really diagnose these things yourself, and neither can strangers on the internet. The best thing to do if this worries you is to go see a counselor who can work with you to help you overcome your tics and refer you to a doctor who can prescribe medication if it's needed. Counselling works: I've finally stopped pulling out my hair for the most part (thank goodness!)

Those kind of behaviours are actually quite common. Alot of people display some forms of OCD at some point in their lives. Like you, I'm not obsessed with washing my hands or tidiness but I hate people's breath or hands near my face and if I get into my head that something has to be a certain way, I obsess over it. As long as it isn't taking over your life and causing you problems, I wouldn't worry about it. If it is, then you need to visit your doctor and talk it through with him/her.
