i'm a nail biter. hi! i have the habit of biting my nails, and it sometimes gets so bad that they hurt. i'd like to stop, but most of the time i don't even realize i'm doing it until someone points it out. i heard about this stuff you can paint on your nails, and it taste bad, so when you bite, you stop. what's it called? and what exactly does it taste like? does it work? does anyone else know anything i can do to stop?
thanks!

Hello,
My boyfriend is a nail biter big time! I just put clear finger nail polish on his nails, nothing real special.
Whenever he bit his nails it would taste funny, not to bad, but enough to make him realize he was doing it, so he could redirect his attention to something else. (ex. chew a piece of gum)
After awhile, he stopped.
I hope that helped!
Good luck! ]
well i had the same problem, but painting the nails does work (for most people anyway)
and when you go to bite them stop and think that you have nail varnish on lol,
and also if once you have painted your nails and you bite some off then re paint them, this will get your brain thinking that if you bite your nails you have to go back and re-paint them (which is a pain lol)
try chewing gum this may also work for some people, as your cewing but not your nails, or messing with things in your hands like pens ect, when you bite your nails it gets into a habbit and to kick the habbit you must try and stop your self from doing it and when you realise your doing it stop,
it taste just strange, and then you like spit little bits out, its like (yuck i wont do that again, and as your nails get longer keep painting them :)
hope this helps ]
I bit my nails terribly for 15 years before finally breaking the habit. It's tough but it can be done!
Personally, I didn't find the nasty tasting stuff particularly helpful. I found that if I was eating anything with my hands, like a sandwich, the stuff would get on it, making it taste unpleasant. The taste is just really bitter and nasty, it's hard to describe. If you'd like to try it anyway, then the stuff I used was Sally Hanson, although I'm pretty sure there are other brands. You should be able to find it at any pharmacy/make-up place.
What I did was to file my nails down so short that I couldn't bite them. I did this for a couple of months until I wasn't tempted to bite them anymore, then I let them grow. I found that keeping them very neatly filed meant that I didn't want to bite them once they'd grown anyway. Another thing I found helpful was if I wanted to bite them, or found myself biting them, I would sit on my hands until the temptation went away.
What's also really important is the condition of your nails. It's likely that after years of biting them, they will be quite weak and split easily. I used a strengthening treatment which you paint on like clear nail varnish and it just works to harden the nails. You should be able to find this in the same places as the nasty tasting stuff.
It is really difficult and if you're a chronic nail biter, you probably bite the skin around them too - a habit I still have, unfortunately. You just have to have alot of will power.
Good luck! ]
Ive heard of it but dont know what its called (If your in the US there is something called control it that does the same thing). I know alot of people it has worked for.
You could also try painting your nails as I doubt you want nail polish chippings in your mouth. OR try false nails or acrylics, I doubt you will bite them and if you do at least its not your real nails
