Whats are good ways for a girl to work out at the gym?
Question Posted Monday June 21 2010, 5:51 am
I go to Total Bally Fitness and I want to lose the fat and get lean muscle. My weight loss goal is 55 pounds in 3 months. I currently weigh 165, and am 5'4".
But I have no idea what to do at the gym.. when I go I just jump on whatever but I don't think that's the best way to do do it. I can't afford a personal trainer so can you give me an idea of what I should do?
When is the best time to go to the gym, too? morning or night? and how many times a day should I eat? Is it really true that no meal should be bigger than my fist?
Actually, it is good to eat little snacks/meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism up. However, your meals don't have to be small if you choose to eat just 3 times a day. I would suggest eating a big breakfast, a lunch smaller than that, and a dinner even smaller than your lunch.
As for the gym, you can ask other people working out their for tips and make new friends. You should warm up and cool down with any ol' stretches and things you probably remember from gym class (like "beauty queens", for example).
There's no such thing as spot weight loss, like if you want to lose weight in your butt, you do exercises targeted towards the butt. That builds up muscle in the butt, but weight loss is overall and there are certain places you lose weight from first, regardless, but this is going off-track.

The time you go to the gym really depends on you and your lifestyle. I don't think either one is going to be better than the other as far as losing weight goes. If I had a gym membership I would probably go in the morning. That way you can get it over with, go home and shower, and finish up the rest of the day without worrying about excercise. However a friend of mine always goes to the gym at night. I guess because it's less crowded? I have never really asked him before.
I am not sure you will lose 55 pounds in three months without almost killing yourself. It's not a realistic goal. I am not saying it can't happen, but I wouldn't recommend it. According to your BMI you are slightly overweight. Losing 55 pounds is a healthy long term goal, as that would put you in a "normal weight" range. However not in three months. Maybe six? Another important thing to remember is muscle weighs more than fat. If you aren't losing as much weight on the scale as you would like, always keep that in mind.
It's important to assess your lifestyle before jumping into this. How are your eating habits? How much excersise do you get already? Here are some general tips as far as eating goes.
- If you aren't hungry, don't eat. Before eating anything, always ask yourself if you are hungry or just in the mood to eat.
- Don't eat in front of the TV. Only eat at the dinner table during desginated eating times (breakfast, lunch, dinner, etc).
- Be aware of what you are eating and what it's made of. I am not saying be an obsessive calorie counter, but it's always good to know what is going into your body.
- Be sure to have a well-balanced diet, with a lot less sugar and sweets.
- When you snack, snack healthy. Fruits, veggies, yogurt, etc.
- If you google healthy eating, you will find all sorts of good eating tips.
As far as excercise goes, if you have a membership, one of the workers should be able to give you a general idea of what machines you should use, etc. If not, make sure you have a well balanced workout as well.
