Small children?

Question Posted Saturday May 15 2010, 10:01 pm

Okay so I recently just got a job at a gym. I have front desk experience at a gym, so that's not an issue. But the gym I am currently employed at requires all personnel to work the kid's room for a certain amount of time before being moved to front desk. This is fine with me, but I'm a little nervous/scared. I've never really worked with small children before. I'm sure I would be able to handle it, but I'm just scared that something might happen that I wouldn't be able to handle. To add more to the nerves, there's a camera feed from the kid's room to the main office (no big), and a television in a common area of the gym, so other staff and parents can monitor what's going on. What if some parent freaks out about something? lafjfapuihf. I guess I'm just a little nervous. Is there anyone with daycare/childcare experience that could give me some advice?

Pretty much anyone's first reaction once they know they'll be working with kids for the first time. I first volunteered for day care when I was in 9th grade, and after a month or so I was just like fuck this shit because not getting paid and spending your Saturdays with little kids isn't ideal for a 14 year old. I've been a camp counselor the last two summers (and going on this summer), and while its not the ideal age group for a 19 year old, getting paid is definitely ideal.

ANYWAY, it sounds like the kids you'll be working with are fairly young, and you'll be in an enclosed area and won't be taking how-many-kids-will-I-lose-at-Disneyland adventures. Because of this, you really have nothing to worry about. They'll just be playing games and driving Hot Wheels around. Just sit at a table, play Janga or something with a few kids, and keep an eye on the others. The most involved you'll have to get as far as conflicts are concerned is via breaking up arguments over sharing a toy or game. It's really pretty simple. And before long, you'll be at the front desk with actual human beings. Hooray!
