The World Wildlife Fund has offices in Toronto I believe and Canadian branches that will take donations readily. Every American charity such as Cancer Society, Alzheimers, Diabities, Red Cross etc. have branches in Canada. Donations to those branches help Canadians.
You could also look into Yellow Brick House, food banks, places for battered women and children and charities that send kids to camps who wouldn't ordinarily get to go. You could even take your money divide it in half and give to a charity and then give to the school to get things they don't have money for. Well luckily the UK Charity Commission has come up with the following 6 hallmarks for a good charity. Except for the English accent, these hallmarks would seem to be equally relevant and useful here in Canada. Staff and directors of charities might find it useful to read the hallmarks and ask ‘does our charity live up to this?’. By the way this is not pass/fail - it is more a matter of continual improvement no matter how good we are.
