How do I learn basic HTML? Bolding, italicizing, changing font size & color

Question Posted Saturday March 13 2010, 11:23 pm

I decided that I am going to make a free webpage like you could create on Yahoo! Geocities awhile back. I thought it would be interesting to write a little bit about myself and have my own "space" to personalize without the hassle of "friending" people like on Myspace, Friendster, MyYearBook, and Facebook. Maybe I'm just strange. Maybe I'm just really artsy. I want to do this though.

So, I was curious about how to change the fonts though. I know it says you must type it in basic HTML but I don't know ANY HTML, really. How can I learn basic HTML on the web? How can I learn HMTL codes for free? I'm particularly interested in:

Bolding
Italicizing
Making font size bigger & smaller
Changing font colors
Creating links

...but, again, I have no idea how to go about any of this. If anybody knows, please feel free to tell me below. If anybody has particularly helpful websites then please feel free to list them for me.

THANKSSS

P.S. I don't want to sound stupid but what does HTML actaully stand for? THNX

HTML: hypertext markup language

Once you get the basic gist of HTML it actually becomes quite easy. I know it seems incredibly confusing right now, but you will eventually get the hang of it, and it will become second nature to you.

When first starting out, it is always best to start with premade layouts. Some will be simple and others will be very confusing. When I was first learning how to create layouts, I would find a simple one, study the codes, and try to find them in the layout itself. Once I did, I would try to code the same thing into a different premade layout, and then play around with it. Go to createblog.com and start searching for some premade layouts. The ones you will want to work with are the "website template" ones.

Below is a list of some simple HTML. To use them, just remove the astericks.

To bold: <*b>your text<*/b>

To italicize: <*i>your text<*/i>

To underline: <*u>your text<*u>

To enlarge text: <*big>your text<*/big>

To shrink text: <*small>your text<*/small>

To change color: <*font color= color you want>your text<*/font color>

To change font: <*font face= name of font>your text<*/font face>

To create a link: <*a href="http:*//thewebsite.com/">*Name of the Website</a>

Like I said, go to createblog.com to find some premade layouts.

If you want some color codes and helpful HTML tips, go to webmonkey.com

Here is another website to help you out with basic HTML: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

This one is for children, so it is really easy to follow: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

Good luck!

Just google it. I'm in a Web Page Design class right now, so i know all this stuff, so feel free to ask me any of your questions!

Start of your coding like this:
<html>
then at the end of all your coding you need to do:
</html> ----/=ending what you said in the other code.

Bolding is: <b>WORDS</b>
Italicizing is: <i>WORDS</i>
Sizing of fonts for headers: <h1><h2><h3><h5><h5><h6>
and then you close it with </h1></h2>etc.
only use one of those -- h1 being the biggest and h6 being the smallest

For regular font like typyin i belive in a paragraph tag (<p>) you say ==so it will look like this&&to change colors::

<p style="text-color:COLOR CODE OR JUST SAY THE COLOR(i.e dark blue); text-size: (size in em) (i.e 1em)>

at the end of the paragraph you just close the paragraph tag with </p>

Links are easy
!!!
<a href="advicenators.com">HERE PUT WORDS YOU WANT TO SAY SO THAT THIS IS WHAT THEY HAVe TO CLIKC ON FOR THEM TO GO TO THE SITE THQAT IS IN THE QUOTES. </a>

Basic rules::
what ever tag you open you must close.
you need a header tag: <head></head>
a body tag: <body></body>
almost everything goes in the body tag

also, if you ever put a picture in your website you need an alt tag. you will get sued if you don't have one. its for the people whos computers read it off to them

hope i helped!

HTML= HyperText Markup Language

this site is designed for kids, but it should help you through the basics of html: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

one of the most basic things you need to know are tags. To bold text, you would start with <b>, write your text, then end with </b>. ( <b> text </b>). For underline, <u> </u>, italics, <i> </i>. Colors have a totally different system based on the darkness and colors in each shade.
