Difference between lap band and gastric bypass

Question Posted Sunday February 21 2010, 12:44 am

My mom is married to this really, really fat guy and he is going to be having the lap-band done. He tried to lose the weight with diet and exercise but he has gained the weight back and he is entirely too large so his health is at risk. He's already on heart medication and high blood pressure medication. He went into the hospital before because he got to be so big his lungs started to fill with fluid! I understand their desire to get this type of surgery done so that he can actually live.

I'm curious about the lap-band though. What is the difference between the lap band and gastric bypass? When my mom said he would be having the "lap band surgery" I said, "Don't you mean gastric bypass surgery?" and she said they were different. What's different about them?

Basically, they both have their pros and cons.
The biggest difference is that lap band surgery
can have the band removed, gastric bypass is forever.

Nothing wrong with either option. They both can save lives. I'm not sure about lap band, but gastric bypass won't be done unless the person sees a psychiatrist first. Lifestyle changes have to be understood. many things a person likes to eat and drink, they will no longer be able to. Once they heal their entire meal will fit into a yogurt container.

It will do him good to take off some of his weight. I believe recovery time is much faster for one getting the lap band surgery.

The lap band is a procedure that puts a small ring, almost like an inner tube around the stomach. This separates off the stomach into two compartments. It is adjustable by means of injecting or removing fluid from the ring through a tap near the skin. It's also reversible.

Gastric bypass surgery is when you make the stomach into two compartments and attach the small intestine to the small compartment. It's much riskier, and irreversible.

A lap band is pretty much a ring placed around your stomach. It does not actually rearrange any part of your digestive system, like gastric bypass surgery does. It's designed to pretty much curb your eating habits so you eat less. It's also easy to remove.

Gastric bypass surgery rearranges your digestive system. I dont' know all the details, but it splits up your stomach into two parts and rearranges your intestines..
