mental aspect of dieting hi! i need some help. I did very unhealthy dieting and about 2 months ago i started eating normally again. i gained some weight because i was taking birth control pills and now that i've got off of them i've lost some weight on my own... but i need a little help to get back at a comfortable weight for me.... but the thing is that it's just hard mentally. even though it's not so bad, i find it really hard to do it. especially, after all i've been through. it's not like i'm eating crap either. i mean, i eat pretty healthy. i just need to go on a structured meal plan. i have done it before, and i know i can do it again... but i need help to be mentally ready to do it. any advice?

There has been a lot of talk about something called "thinking yourself thin" it's where you imagine yourself as a thin person each time you look in the mirror (at your goal weight etc), doing what you need to get there, eating the right foods etc... I guess the trick is that your body comes around and starts to support your brain's thinking on this. (the subconscious) starts taking over and doing things to help achieve your goals and then you yourself are able to start doing it. It's kind of a way to "conditioning" yourself into being able to do it! I believe it also has stress relieving techniques also. (which cortisol - stress hormone is NOTORIOUS for making people fat around the belly) you might want to find out more? I hope this helps with the mental aspects of your dieting, good luck! Exercising is definitely a good way to start loosing weight and to tone up.
I think that you just need the motivation to loose weight. I find that you really have to want it to loose it. Don't think of it as dieting either think of it as a health kick or something, but don't stress about it.
I'm glad that you're eating normally again, because as soon as you stop the unhealthy dieting the pounds tend to pile back on again. Also if you're not eating right or skipping meals, your body stores whatever you eat as fat causing you to gain even more weight.
I find it best to eat little and often, that way your metabolism gets working very fast and you burn off more calories. Also remember to eat breakfast because that will kick start your metabolism. But don't eat rubbish snacks either, eat healthy snack foods like carrot sticks etc... in between meals and try to cut down on the amount you put on your plate. And when you notice that you feel full... stop eating, don't eat more just because you don't want to waste what's on your plate.
Mentally I'd say try not to worry too much about how much you weigh. It's how you feel and how you look that matter, not what the scales tell you - Someone can weigh 10st and still look as good as a person who weighs 8st.
p.s. don't forget to reward yourself for being good, that way you have something to look forward to. ]
