Depression/drug use

Question Posted Thursday January 14 2010, 12:37 am

I've been depressed as long as I can remember. Sure, there are some times when I'm not as horribly upset with life as others, infact sometimes I'm happy. But I always fall back into my slump. I've struggled with cutting, and yes I do feel that cutting has made me even more depressed in the long run. I'm working on that, and I haven't cut since I think September.
Part of my depression comes from the fact that I cannot be social unless I'm under the influence of something, anything. Alcohol, Marijuana, and one time Oxycotton have allowed me to be more social in environments where I don't feel comfortable. When I go places I don't know a lot of people, I drink ONLY because it's social.. I don't really do it cause I enjoy being drunk. I smoke because I like to, I drink because I can loosen up. Both however allow me to be a less awkward person. I do not blame my depression for my drug use, although maybe it is the reason? I just wanted to know how I can allow myself to ease off of drinking, smoking or taking pills to get more out there.
My mom knows I smoke. My mom knows I drink. My mom knows I'm depressed. My mom knows I'm bipolar. I've gone to counseling, I've been on medicine. Nothing works. Is my drug use linked to my depression? Probably, I'm not proud looking back on the fact I do drugs. I'm not proud of the fact that I lie to get money, or that I am literally playing with life until it breaks.
I need help out of my depression, anything goes. Don't feel the need to censor what you're saying, I really want to know what you think.

I think you should do rehab. Then group counsling. Rehab will help you with your drinking and pills. smoking weed. Honestly. I used to do it i dont know how old you are but my reason for quitting was my child. If i didnt stop and got caught they could have taken my baby from me. I never touched it again. drinking i drink when my husband and i play cards with friends its a beer or to. when we go to the bar i barly drink. i guess being a mom got the best of me id rather drive my husband home and make sure he is safe then drink with him and get in a wreck. Now Group counsling. will defintly help you. in many ways. find out what is truely bothering you and you meet people who are struggling as well. those people you are hanging out with. if they are pressuring you into drinking. drop them. they are not worth your life. you can find plenty of people who dont drink or smoke and dont pop pills. you were brought here for a reason and its not to harm yourself with drugs and alcohol. i can promise you that. (im not a very religous person) i dont go to church which i should but maybe you should try. you can meet great people and clean up your act that way. safe your self. if you ever need someone to talk to. i know im a complete stranger but i love helping and i been through a lot like what you are going through email me. ashaboo77@yahoo.com

Doing drugs will not do any good to your health, even to deal with your depression. If you want to cure your depression, you should go see a therapist. Maybe you're just holding back your problems. It's time you express it to a professional. Just let it all out. It really makes a difference.

do you have any friends that you are comfortable with?anyone that you feel free to talking to?it might be good to do the things that make you happy and talk to the people that you trust.it doesnt have to be about your problems but talking and laughing is good.sound sliek your close with your mum so manybe itd be good to go out for coffee with her and hang out with her.do soem shopping.i know its hard but it could work and it could help whatr you going to loose?another thing is that when your feeling really down try not to lock yourself up in your room.try writing how you feel down on a piece of paper and ripping that paper up when your done youll feel alot better.just try it and see how you feel.i hope you find something that works.just remember your life isnt cheap,so dont treat it like it is.cherish it.i know soemone that was alot like you.into drugs etc and in the end he joined a religon and hes been clean ever since.it may help to go see a priest or soemthing or go to church?im not a church person myself but it could help you...dont give up.im inspired that youv spoken out and looking for help.just dont give up

You sound like my friend. Depressed his whole life, alcohol acid and ecstasy to loosen up, etc.

He started seeing a therapist/psychologist as well as a psychiatrist. He's now getting his shit together. You should too. It doesn't matter if it didn't work the first time; these things take time and as you know, it's better than the alternative.
