SarcasticGreetings answered Monday December 21 2009, 4:56 pm: It's diminutive (sp?). A lot of languages have it, Spanish included. Diminutives are usually suffixes (Spanish uses "-ito"; German adds "-chen"; Japanese adds "-chan"; English sometimes uses "-let" (piglet, booklet), etc.)
Sometimes it deals with physical height or size (hermanita = little sister), but it can change the meaning as well. It really depends on the situation.
If you're talking to a person, it can mean they're small (a little boy) or it can be a sign of affection (a mother calling her son Pablo "Pablito", etc). In general it's used a LOT when talking to/about little children. [ SarcasticGreetings's advice column | Ask SarcasticGreetings A Question ]
