Birth control

Question Posted Friday December 4 2009, 10:39 pm

I've been taking YAZ for about 2 years now and I haven't had any bad side effects. However, reading about the lawsuits against YAZ and it's possible side effects scares me.
What other brands of birth control pills are good?

Birth Control is a very personal choice and we all make different choices for different reasons.

I, personally, love the Nuvaring. Many people feel uncomfortable with the application part and taking it out because you have to literally put your fingers inside of you vagina to do both of those things. But if you are okay with your fingers being in there, it is pretty fool-proof. You can't feel it once it is in (and your partner usually can't feel it either during sex). It can't come out on its own. The chemicals in it work locally or just in that area. That is great because you don't have chemicals running throughout your whole body. Last, it is really nice to only have to think about it once a month! It is equally effective to the Pill.

I've been on Yaz for over a year and like Melody, I can understand your concern. However, the lawsuits are a result of a sort of false advertising Bayer did when initially marketing the product. It was portrayed as "safer" than other pills when in actuality it has the same risks as any other pill. If your doctor deemed it safe for you to be on birth control, you have nothing to worry about. if ANYTHING, just have your potassium levels tested (but that's right in the pamphlet too).

I am on YAZ too and completely understand where you are coming from. I don't think it's anything you need to be so concerned about that you are willing to switch your birth control though. Your pills come with a pamphlet that clearly discusses all the possible side effects that go along with taking the pill. However if you don't smoke or have any serious health conditions and you haven't had any side effects yet, you will more than likely be fine. Discuss this with your doctor since it concerns you so much. It should put your mind at ease. :)
