High school is really hard on me...should I drop honors classes?
Question Posted Tuesday October 13 2009, 11:55 pm
Hi, Advicenators. I'm a freshman now and high school is awesome in many ways but not academics when it comes to me. I'm in all honors classes, and some are easy (such as science and English), but geometry and social studies are making me feel awful.
I didn't finish my first math test in time for the bell, so I got a D, even though I knew all the material. I don't know why it took me so long to get through what I did finish. We have a test coming up this friday and I'm pretty nervous because I feel like the only guy who is doing badly.
Social studies is even worse though because I didn't finish our first essay either, and received a F. Two other students failed too, but I feel like I just can't really work under pressure and I'm not doing too well, overall. I could go to regular instead of honors, but I would have to go to regular science and English, and lose my good teachers in that class as well.
Any advice would be helpful.

Yes, they are very hard and give a lot of work. However, don't give up so easily. Yes, colleges don't pay much attention to Freshmen year..but they look at you better if you've been in Honors classes. I understand you're having a hard time..believe me when I was your age I did too.
Some people will say "Study a lot" or "pay attention". I tried doing all that..it doesn't help unless your positive in yourself and believe you can do it. I know that sounds stupid, but it's true. You seem like a smart person..and like others said..they wouldn't put you in honors if they felt you couldn't handle it!
If you were to switch, it would be your choice..and only yours. Don't go off of what others say. If you're having a tough time, then maybe you are better off in regular courses. I also know it sucks losing good teachers..I recently got switched into Honors History...and I had to lose my regular teacher who is great. However, sometimes you just have to get over it and move on. It doesn't mean you will never see them again. I still talk to my old teacher and even ask him for help. Honors is their to benefit you. Consider yourself lucky to be in honors..so many people wish they were. I used to too. This is my first year in honors classes. So far, it's okay.
Just focus and be yourself. Give it time! You can always succeed in everything. Just TRY your best. If you are having a hard time..stay after school with the teachers and get extra help. If you still are having a hard time..I would consider changing to regular courses.
It's completely up to you!

Take a breather before each test and work hard at it. Study the material. My little brother and I have no idea why got placed in honor classes last year only because thats the only place they had openings at his new school never brought a book home to study nothing and he loved it. So its okay to study your self. [ Sweet_LiL_Angel's advice column | Ask Sweet_LiL_Angel A Question ]

However, when they say lower grades, they usually mean like low b, high c. If you're getting d's or f's, you should probably drop the honors courses at least for now. The thing about it is that getting those grades makes you stressed out and affect your other classes.
