does anyone else feel this way?

Question Posted Sunday October 11 2009, 12:10 am

for some reason, i cannot watch rape scenes in movies. i always close my eyes, cover my ears, and turn away even at the ones that aren't very violent. it's completely and utterly disturbing to me. i can handle blood and gore and anything else pretty much but for some reason i just can't watch it, idk how anyone else can.

It's not like you're abnormal. When it comes to movies, I can't watch people getting hurt. Even though I love Home Alone 1 & 2, I can't watch when they get hit with the bricks or the paint cans. I always cringe & close my eyes.

It's normal to do this. If something makes you uncomfortable to watch, then your mind or reflexes does something so that you don't have to.

As far as other people being able to watch it, I'm not sure. Some people realize that even though it's so violent, it's just a movie. Or, they just don't feel bad when they see it.

I think "rape" is a more relatable issue than bloody and violent occurrences because people don't think mass bloody violence like in war movies is possible for them (unless you're in the military, etc). The media has desensitized people to violence. Rape is sexual violence in a way but still different. Like death is sometimes better than being raped and not killed because you live on to suffer the effects of being raped.

Thats called being a human being. you have whats called empathy, the ability to feel for others, and therefore, your mind is reacting in a completely normal way. some things are just so traumatic that you can't handle them, even as a third party. besides, most people in modern society are numbed to violence, while issues like rape are still "no-fly zones" for most in the media. please continue this behavior, it gives me faith in our species.

I think that's pretty normal, I find it really uncomfortable to watch scenes of extreme violence. Not many people like to see upsetting images and rape is particularly difficult because it is such an invasion.
