Constipation

Question Posted Sunday October 4 2009, 8:44 pm

I eat fiber everyday for breakfast and lunch. I exercise whenever possible 2-3 times a week. I drink as much water as I can. I stay constipated. I don't know what to do anymore. There are some days where I can't go for 3 days unless I use a laxative. I've asked my mom if I can go see a doctor, but she keeps telling me they're just going to tell me to do what I've been doing. Is there no medication? I've been held back because of this for a while now. I can't deal with it anymore. There must be a solution. I cry a lot. It's hurting me emotionally because I can't help myself. I feel very helpless. :'(

I would maybe try something like miralax b/c its not like the normal laxative that can make your body depend on it. And if you get really bad stomach aches or chronic headaches or feel nauseated then I would maybe go get tested for some kind of food intolerance.

Its possible you are getting to much fiber.
The following is from....
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

Adequate Intake Recommendations:
Women <50>50 years: 21 grams
Men <50>50 years: 30 grams

How much is too much?
As with anything, moderation is always best, even with 'healthy' foods like high fiber foods. I have seen clients before who are actually eating so much fiber that they are constipated! If you don't drink enough water along with your fiber, fiber can actually cause a blockage, and sometimes it can be very serious and require surgery. This is rare, but if you are a big fiber eater, make sure you are also an avid water drinker.

Effects of too much fiber:
Gas, diarrhea, general abdominal discomfort, constipation, possible blockages, or the need for urgent movements. Some research points to the inability to absorb certain nutrients, but other research refutes that.

I am not exactly sure how much is too much, but I am inclined to say anything above 50 grams per day may be a bit much. Try to stay less than 45 grams and you should be clear of any of these side effects.

try metamucil or benefiber or u can try something like fiber drinks those should help but avoid laxatives and avoid cheese for awhile becausve cheese will make you more constipated and so will laxatives.laxatives dont always work so its better to ask a doctor because a doctor will be able to tell if you have stomach problems and CAN prescribe you with something to help.I know I used to be in this situation before and my doctor helped me.I am positive that a doctor can tell you whats wrong.Good luck and I hope my advice helps.Let me know if it helped and I will help with anything else you may need help on.

Well, you don't want to have to resort to medication unless there is NO OTHER alternative.

Have you tried fiber drinks, such as Metamucil?
AVOID LAXITIVES. With regular use, your body becomes dependent on them. Try fiber drinks, and if they fail, use stool softeners. They aren't hard on your body like laxative are.
