How early should I get a mammogram since my mother had breast cancer?

Question Posted Friday October 2 2009, 1:29 am

My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was only 33 years old. I've heard such things as getting your first mammogram at 10 years younger than when your mother was diagnosed and then every few years. I also heard that I should start getting mammograms when I hit 21 since my mother had cancer. I am 22 now though and I haven't had a breast cancer screening yet. Should I get my first one at 22 or 23 or when?

Her cancer was so high up in her breast that it was not detected on a mammogram actually, and she found it herself during self-examination. She went through chemotherapy, radiation, and a partial mastectomy before the cancer was completely gone. It was REALLY hard on her!

I guess I should ask my gynecologist the next time I see him but that won't be for awhile and I'd like an idea of what I should be doing to protect myself from cancer. My mother became scared when I had 2 cysts a couple of years ago.

Thank you for your help/answers!

You can perform your own breast test but if it runs in the family sooner better than later is the point here. if you think it's important enough go as so as possible. If you don't think it's important you may be sorry you waited. Good luck
