My new Puppy :)

Question Posted Wednesday September 30 2009, 1:39 pm

I got my new puppy, she is six weeks old.

And please don't give me all the crap about her being to young. She eats on her own, and has stoped winning at night.

Any who...
My puppy is a smart dog, an australian sheperd and possibley 1/4 lab but I want to start training her stuff, like the usuall, fetch, sit, etc. But I don't know how to start?

What stuff should will I be able to teach her since she is so young, and what are easy ways to do that.

Well congrats on the new puppy.
With my dog, we started training her to sit and all that. She's also part Australian Sheperd, we used dog treats something she likes to munch on. We used our hands to tell her what to do and now all we have to do is use our hands to make her do whatever.
We first started out with sit. I'd say sit and then used my pointer finger and pointed down to the ground. Don't touch her or nothing just do that and finally she'll want the treat bad enough to do that. When she does this give her a treat and work on that for a week or so. But after the first week quit saying sit when you point down. Then when you do get that one accomplished. Do these.

1. Pointer finger pointing down means sit.
2. Squat and Put finger on the ground when she is sittng. Tell her to lay down. Constantly do this until she lies down. Do this for a week and then quit saying lay down and just use your finger. YOu have to do this though when she is sitting.
3. When you get her to lay down on command, then when she is laying take your pointer finger and roll it in a circle do this and say rollover. Do this the same amount of time but quit saying rollover after awhile.
4. Stay is kind of like using the sit method, but give her a harsh look and say stay.

Probably alot to read and kindof boring, but i hope it helps in some way.

Your little poochy sounds adorable. Congrats Have you named her yet? on Austar or Fox T.V. Ceasar Milan is a dog whisperer. worth watching if she develops any bad habit. I do know from watching Ceasar I learned these things when you take her for a walk YOU must be the first out the doorway. If the dog goes out first she thinks she is pack leader. you don't want that you have to be pack leader. when walking use a short lead if another dog in street confronts your dog on the street or through a gate lift her head with the lead this changes the brain wave of your dog when a dogs head is low to ground a dog fight will ensue. lift head like you would a show dog. if you want your dog to sit, Hold a treat in your hand place your hand above her face move your hand towards her tail a little bit dogs have to sit to see your hand give her a treat. a small dog bicky Never give your dog human chocholate it makes them quite ill. never give your dog a cooked chicken bones or small chop bones they gulp and choke on them Raw bones O.K. or pig ears to chew on have toys other wise they start chewing on your stuff because thier teeth & jaws need stimulation. play frisbee, when training always treat your dog like a dog not like a child they only understand simple commands not the english language. If your dog goes to bit someone or another dog goes to bite your dog Poke the instigator the aggressive one in the neck with your 2 fingers firmly enough to let them know you pack leader say NO.. in firm voice. When a dog is held down firmly to the ground by the neck you assertain you pack leader she's submissive. a pat is as good as reward than any don't over do the food rewards. A clock under her bedding helps her feel comfort they think it's mum heart beat. place paper on floor when they go to toilet pick them up put them on paper gradually remove the amount of paper over a 2 week period till they grow out of peeing or pooing in the house. Keep disinfecting the floor. If you don't want her pooing on your lawn Place a few bottles of water in a coke bottle on the grass animals don't go to the toilet near a water supply. These dogs like a lot of excersise Have a routine your dog will know it's walky time before you do.I hope this helps. Good luck with you new best friend.

First, congratulations on your new puppy! I'm sure she is absolutely adorable! I used my dogs dinner to train them with tricks especially sit and down. I wouldn't give them a kibble (of course my dogs are yorkshire terriers and small...) until they do the trick correctly. I would always say, "Good girl___!" I'd say the word and push their bottom down to learn 'sit', and then give them the kibble. This is of course just how I trained my dogs, I'm sure there are better and other methods out there. Good luck!
