Who the heck is this Charles Manson guy? and this "Squeaky" Fromme chick?!
I keep seeing these articles on Yahoo! and Google News about this woman named Lynette Alice "Squeaky" Fromme being released from prison after 34 years. They said she was part of the Charles Manson family and tried to kill a president or something. I have NEVER heard about any of this and I'm not sure what the big deal is about. I don't even know who Charles Manson is--unless he's in some sort of relation to Marilyn Manson? Could somebody explain?

The people below me have pretty much answered your question, but I have one thing to add. Marilyn Manson chose his name (that's not his real name) by combining the names of Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson= a star and a murderer. Don't worry bout rating this, just fyi.

There is a book out about him and is "family" called Helter Skelter. He was a hippie in the 60's and started a commune. He mostly attracted runaway girls and boys. Young and not to bright. He wanted to start a race war in the US (he was kind of like a white supremacist). He totally controled the kids in his commune. he convinced them that there was going to be this huge race riot in the US and the whites were going to come out on top and he was going to be the leader of all, and they would be his disciples. (there were actually a lot of race riots in the US in the 60's, both east and west coast)
Well things were not moving fast enough for him, so he had his disciples break into the home of some very rich and famous people. While he waited outside, his "family members" brutally killed with knives and clubs, all of the people in the house. (google: Sharon Tate Murders) A week later they did it again at another rich mansion.
Manson was hoping that the police and public would think it was black criminals who performed the murders and that it would start a riot to end all riots.
I forget how he was caught.
Sqeaky Fromm was one of he disciples. (family members) but she was not involved inte Tate murders. She was however, present at Manson's trial and supported him. A few years later, still influenced by her time spent with Manson, she tried to kill President Gerald Ford. But her gun misfired. She was sentenced to life in prison and is being released after 30 years for good behavior, I guess. Some say she has changed and is repentant. And probably no harm to anyone now anyway. There are other members of the family, the ones who did commmit the murders who are still in prison. Can't think of their names right now.

Charles Manson was one heck of a psycho.
And no lol, no relation to Marilyn Manson, though he probably chose his name because of the effect "Manson" would have on people.
