 It's an equation for distance travelled.
 
 d = vt + (1/2)at^2
 
 In this case, though, your starting velocity (v) is 0, since you're dropping it, not throwing it.  0*t will equal zero, so you can forget about that part.
 
 The 9.81 comes from acceleration due to gravity.
