Parakeets nose looking dry

Question Posted Saturday August 8 2009, 9:32 pm

Does anyone know why my parakeets nose might be looking dry. I have 2 and one's nose is nice and pink and the cockatiel's nose is looking pretty pink but a different shad (as it's always been) So do you think maybe she isn't drinking enough water or something or is it too hot? Any ideas? Thank you.

PS, They are about 6 months old now, could it just be a part of the maturing process? I heard their noses can change as they get older..

I have had budgies for about 9 yrs now and if the cere ic dry looking it is a girl and if it is colorful it is a boy because the boys have to impress the girls with that color

Here's a direct quote from a page about
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location) budgie birds</a>

Once they get older you can tell the sex of your bird by the color of it's cere. If it's a male Budgie it will have a blue cere, and if it's a female it will have a brown cere.

(The cere is the soft fleshy area on top of the beak surrounding the nostrils.

The colorful strip where their nostrils are located are called "ceres" and it is normal for them to shed/peel every once in a while like we shed our skin.

And yes, their nose color changes. Usually, you can't tell the gender of the babies until they mature. Females ceres usually get brown/pink and males violet/blue.

I'm not a parakeet expert by any means, but I'll try to point you to someone who is. Try birdhobbyist.com. I use the reptile counterpart (kingsnake.com), and they have lots of breeders and vets that get on regularly to answer questions of this nature. Also try googling parakeet care sheets.
