Can I Lose Weight by Walking?

Question Posted Sunday July 19 2009, 10:34 pm

I walked about 3 hours and 30 minutes today at a normal pace--no running, jogging, etc. Can I lose weight by walking this much or do I need to run or jog or something to get my heart rate up more to produce weight loss?

I think what you're doing will work, either by walking for an extended period of time or by exercising hardcore in 10 minute bursts. I heard that really works.. if you jog intensely in short interval. If you can, try to do something that will get your heart pumping more if you want to lose weight faster in a shorter amount of time.

My mom walked daily for 45 minutes to an hour at a swift pace and lost nearly 95 pounds in less then a year. It was actually quite miraculous. I go to the gym daily for about an hour and don't experience any weight fluctuation. So absolutely you can lose weight from walking, its all about getting your body moving. Running and jogging are also great, but walking will still do just fine :)

The fact that you're walking that long is good. You could lose weight, but if you wanted to lose weight faster, you'd have to find a way to pick up your heart rate, like you said.

Then again, I'm not a doctor, nor am I a fitness trainer.

Just going off of knowledge from school ;].
