why do dogs lick people?

One thing it seems some of the former answers have missed...the reason it is a sign of affection is because the dog thinks they are grooming you. When my border collie starts licking my hand, she'll systematically cover every inch of my arm until I stop her. It's her way of cleaning me and straightening my hair out...not that I'm especially hairy, but whatever.
You may notice two dogs who like each other taking turns grooming each other. To them, you're one of those dogs. ]
Dogs and cats lick people because our skin is salty and they like the taste.
They also lick you if they really like you, because my pets lick me all the time. =]
And it's also a way of remembering who you are, if they remember the taste, smell, and sight of you.

Dogs either lick people if they have a scent that appeals to them or if they like the person who's petting them. ]
It's because licking is the only way they can express themselves. Basically, if your dog licks you it's trying to bond with you. And, also because we sweat & we taste like salt - so they think it's yummy (funny but very very true).
