How to feel safe when home alone

Question Posted Wednesday July 8 2009, 2:39 am

I just moved into my new apartment and I'm really nervous to be alone! It's a stupid fear, I'm sure, but I'm having a hard time falling asleep now. Are there any ways to cope with nervousness? Can anybody say something to make me feel safer alone in my new apartment? I know I live in a good neighborhood but... :\ IDK!

it's ok to feel afraid, I know I did when I just moved into my new house a few months ago. all I did was left most of the lights on and I slept with my i-pod in my ears so that you don't hear any of the noises. it's all in your head
have a good night sleep :)

Start by turning on all of your main lights and locking your doors (obviously).

Then, like a few columnists said below, keep busy. Watch T.V or listen to music to start (because the presence of noise will help ease your nerves).

Then gradually start trying other things, like reading a book or doing dishes. Like I said, start out with something noisy (at least, that helps me when I'm feeling nervous home alone.)

If you're starting to feel nervous at some point during the night, call a friend. Call a friend and talk to them until you start to feel better. This helps me a lot, too :)

Hope this helps!

moving is always quite the experience, and it's gonna be hard until you get used to it. So, here's a few ideas to get over your fear :]
- listen to music, dont be afraid to blast it throughout your apartment, so you here noise and not eery silence.
- go on the computer and maybe keep it on, go on facebook [if you have one] or a site a bunch of your friends are on, so you know that somewhere in your house you can reach people you know quickly.
- call someone on your phone and have a nice little chat :] or maybe invite a few friends or one friend over for lunch or dinner and a movie. [but no scary movies hahaa, not the best idea right now.]
- before you go to sleep read a book or watch some tv, it'll calm you and then you can fall asleep more easily.
- cook something and i heard that getting vanilla scented candles can calm you which would also help your anxiety and help you sleep better.

I know it's gonna be hard, but try not to think about it and just be calm and at ease, it's okay. you'll get used to it in no time with a few of the tricks i gave you to make your fear go away, for now, at least :] ! hope i helped, and don't sweat it, you'll be fine. if you need anything else, inbox me and let me know. xxo !

Keep busy like, watch tv, computer, talk on the phone, invite friends over if already met new people. this would keep you distracted from being scared. for sleep, keep a night light next to your bed or keep a lamp light on.
