Question Posted Wednesday June 17 2009, 4:21 pm

What does it mean when someone says "The ether was changed"

What exactly is ether? I looked it up but I still don't see how it fits into that sentence.

NinjaNeer answered Thursday June 18 2009, 4:01 pm:
Ether was used to explain how light can travel through space. There were arguments as to how a wave could travel without a substance to travel in, so someone came up with the theory of ether. They basically thought that all the planets and stars were supsended in ether. That argument went to pot when they realized that moving through a substance at the speed we do should cause really fast wind.

Science lesson aside, basically, it means that the universe changed.

"The ether" is the invisible medium that everything is in, or the force that surrounds and permeates everything. It is the same as saying "The fabric of the Universe". It can also refer a cloud of invisible stuff, such as radio waves.

Alone, the sentence you quoted doesn't really make sense.
