Underage drinking on private property

Question Posted Friday June 5 2009, 6:49 pm

In which states is it legal to drink alcohol under 21 while on private property? I got in trouble for drinking in a friend's basement while the parents were home and I'm 19 years old. My parents were like "if you're an adult and offered a drink in someones private home, is that really illegal?" or something to that effect. It's hard to keep up with the laws about this kind of thing, because they are always changing. Apparently this law was changed in Michigan (where i live). So, im wondering what states it is legal in? Also, the parental consent thing for adults 19-20 only works if you are in your parent's home and they are there, if there even is a parental consent exception in your state, right?

I looked this up and it seems that it is entirely illegal to drink under the age of 21 in Michigan, with and without your parents consent.

You could always go to the UK - from 8 you can drink on private property with your parent/carer's consent, from 14 in restaurants/places selling food with a MEAL and your parent/carer's consent and from 18 you can buy and consume alcohol whenever and wherever you like (with the exception of 'No Street Drinking Zones').

I'm from Michigan, too. From what they teach in class and in Driver's Ed [I think?], this is illegal.

If anyone is caught having given alcohol to a minor, even on private property, the minor and the person are subject to punishment by the law.

However, you're 19- you could go to Canada XD
I'm kidding, but you could if you wanted to.

People under 21 are allowed to consume alcohol under the supervision of their parents in New Mexico, Texas, and Wisconsin. From what I can see, it is not legal in Michigan for someone under 21 to drink alcohol under any circumstances.
