linguistics =)

Question Posted Wednesday May 27 2009, 4:53 am

would anyone know about how much money a linguist would make and what the job would involve? i seem to have a knack for studying languages and i am interested in seeing if i can make a good career out of it. I am 17, and I already speak three languages fluently, working on a fourth...

Good for you! You should be working for the UN!

Yes, there are lots of jobs and ones that pay good money too. It really depends on what other interests you have. Language skills are used in law, the military, politics, international business- just about every field.

Once you decide on what college you're going to (hopefully one with a good linguistics program) you should definitely talk with your professors and academic counselors to see what options best fit your particular skills and interests.

And a piece of advice from experience- I had the same language skills that you did when I was younger and majored in languages. My academic counselor suggested that I also choose something else BESIDES languages, at least for a minor (like marketing, business, whatever...) so I'd have even more job possibilities. I didn't and now I wish I had listened to him!

It is good to combine languages with another skill, particularly because of globalization (we're now not just competing for jobs with people from the US but sometimes from all over the world). And in many other countries it is common to speak several languages fluently.

So the bottom line is yes, your skills can get you a good job but if you have another practical skill to go with it, even better.

Hope that helps and good luck.

Well CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU!!!!! :D
I very much respect those who take the time to learn different languages and study different cultures, not too many people out there know more than 3 languages FLUENTLY.. so i must say.. youre a very intelligent person!

And yes, you can def. find jobs in that area. My cousin, she's 19, is planning on becoming an English teacher for German kids (Elementary level).

There are many different job areas for linguistics. There is Historical linguistic, Computational linguistic, Applied linguistic, Neurolinguistics, etc etc.

What you have to do is go throw a bunch of websites, which i will provide.. and make sure to read all forms of Linguistics out there !
You can def. make a good career out of it.
But may have to search a few different schools in your area, or beyond your area if you plan on moving. Remember, the better the school.. the better success you may have working for this type of job.
