My period is unbearable. its extremely heavy, very irregular, crampy, ugh. anyway. whats a good way to control it? is birth control the best bet? 15/f. heellpp
There is an over the counter herb called 'evening primrose'. I took it several months for cramps when I was going through a bad spell with my period, and I swear I didn't even know my period was coming until I started. No PMS, bloating, sore breasts or cramps!
Now - that helps your cramps but not your heavy flow. That HAS to be discussed with your Doctor.
One problem with heavy periods is they can cause iron loss and you may need a supplement or extra iron in your diet.
There are several reason for heavy periods (also called Menorrhagia if you want to google it.) Given your age, Hormonal imbalance is the most likely cause, and there are different methods of birth control that can help with that. Hormonal imbalance can also be caused by thyroid disease.

Sure, it will help with periods (although it is known to cause abnormal bleeding,) but it is not healthy and I've known people to get bad side-effects from birth control. One person I am close to had taken it for quite a while. Then she started getting such bad dizziness spells when she was up and just walking around, she started getting scared that she would fall over. During the end of her being on the pill (before she stopped taking it completely) she almost fell into a depression because it was messing with her hormones so much. She is so much happier now without it; I've noticed a big change.
More natural ways to get through bad periods exist though. Being active and getting some exercise helps with the cramping, as does drinking a lot of water. You can also use a heating pad on your tummy or take a hot bath.
I would recommend not taking Aleve/Naproxen/Advil/Ibuprofen while you are on your period because they cause your blood to thin which causes a heavier flow. If you use tampons, I do recommend wearing a pantyliner or pad along with that, in case of leakage.
Irregular periods are pretty common at this age, but if you have concerns or things just don't seem right, you can always go talk to your local doctor. [ Samcia's advice column | Ask Samcia A Question ]

So i would suggest it but it might not work for you either so try it and see. hope i helped =] [ Sami143's advice column | Ask Sami143 A Question ]
Jasminaa answered Tuesday March 3 2009, 9:26 am: Well many say that it helps it, but I wouldn't consider it. With birth control your period is lighter, which means all the other blood that is needs to come out, will not be able to, therefore, it will stay. Which isn't the best thing ever ! I think you should just deal with it, I don't mean to sounds rude, but every girl has it, and the really bad periods only come once in a while, the best you could do is like use a heat pad for the cramps, and take pain killers.
Hope I helped. [ Jasminaa's advice column | Ask Jasminaa A Question ]
