I am being completely and utterly serious.
I am researching demons, specifically names, behavior, appearance, etc for a story that I am doing. I am religious (Roman Catholic) and my mother has taught me that "playing" with the supernatural/demons, devil, etc may be "inviting" them into your lives. (Being possessed, or haunted) I do not want this to happen to me. I do not wish to mess with them, I just want to do research. I would prefer for the advice given to be done by somebody who is religious (some form of Christianity is preferred, but as long as you believe in good and evil, etc) I am being serious. Also, is just WRITING about them dangerous? Thank you so much.

I think it is important to know information about the opposing side to strengthen your own side if you know what i mean. As long as you still believe in your own religion, just researching about others will not harm you in any way. [ hotpotato's advice column | Ask hotpotato A Question ]

No, its not dangerous.
As someone raised in a devout Catholic family, I know alot about fear. Fear is the tool religion uses to control you, and fears like this have been passed down from generation to generation in order to keep people afraid and praying.
In the past, these fears were meant to keep people from trying to actively commune with "demonic things". People would forsake God and pray to other things, including the demonic, when their lives weren't going the way they wanted.
There is something to be said also, about possession. I've read a good bit about this, and alot of symptoms of possession are symptoms of what today we call "Psychotic Behavior" that is a result of Brain Chemistry. I believe in Good and Evil, but I believe that in people its a result of choice and predisposition. Some people are born to it, some people allow themseles to be influenced by it, but fearing knowledge is stupid. I've spoken with a couple of priests about this as well (as part of research for similar reasons that you have) and their opinions are that in general demonic influence is limited to those who invite it into their lives by asking for the influence to affect them. Basically, if you want evil in your life, it will find you one way or another. If you don't, it won't.
My mom and I both loved the Harry Potter series. My father was scared of it. Its a story about a teenaged boy using magic. He saw it as a portal to the demonic.
A book thats encouraged literally thousands of kids to read, and he saw it as dangerous because of some vague unfounded fear about "opening yourself up to the demonic"

What you mum meant was practicing using the "Dark Arts" in a way in which you called upon them (magic for instance), that what she meant by 'playing' with them.
