bladder infection (ughhhhhh)

Question Posted Friday January 16 2009, 7:45 pm

ok i have two questions here:

one: i have a bladder infection. it hurts soooo badly. not only in my stomach, but also "down there" every time i go to pee. -.-'' WHEN WILL THIS END?!?!! i went to the doctor today and they gave me these pills but so far, i only feel better for a short time and then start feeling like shit again. so yeah. someone know when this will go away? please tell me. im dying.

second: my boyfriends mom asked him if we have been having sex because she says you can get bladder infections if you have sex too much. and he and i had sex 2 times the other day, and then once the next day. we're pretty sexually active. i dont think 3 times in two days is too much, but if i DID get my bladder infection from that, how can i prevent this from happening again? and dont tell me to not have sex, because we use protection every time. so just tell me how i could not get a bladder infection, but still have sex with my boyfriend?

thanks so much. if you only know the answer to one, go ahead and answer. you dont have to know both to answer. :)

It will take another day or two. Take the medication as directed.
Drink LOTS of water, or better yet, drink cranberry juice, that will cut down on the pain quite a bit. Keep drinking, every moment.

The good news is that the next time you have a bladder infection you will probably notice earlier and it won’t have time to get nearly this bad.

Your boyfriend’s mom is both right and wrong. You can get spontaneously get bladder infections; it doesn't have to be associated with being sexually active. And it’s not so much about ‘too much’ sex, it’s about making sure you are cleaning up afterwards. Take a shower; don't just throw your panties back on and go about your day. Wash up good with warm water.

I Have never heard having a lot of sex cn cause bladder infections.

What I do know is ; my mum sometimes has bladder infections - the doctor usually tells her its because she isnt drinking enough water. So for about two weeks my mum makes sure she drinks about 5 glasses a water each day - but usually boils it - so it's warm (and will make her feel better)

It will go if you drink enough water for the next two weeks.

Hope I Helped :)

1. The pills aren't miracle workers and obviously take some time. With most medicines, it can take up to 3 days before you start to feel any different.
Since we don't know what meds you are on or anything about them, you could call your doc and ask when they should start kicking in.
How long do you have to take them for? Most treatments are about a week, so you're obviously not goint to feel much better in the first day. Crap, I know.
but by all means, if you feel WORSE than you started with, they may not be doing the trick and you don't want this nasty infection spreading to your kidneys. In this case, should go back to the doc. but for now, hang in there.

2. Whilst bladder infections are fairly common, sex can be a cause, even if you do use protection, as condoms and spermicides increase the risk (this does NOT mean you should have unprotected sex)
To prevent it from happening again, you should: *Make sure you're clean down there before and you urinate after sex to flush away bacteria.
*When you need to pee, pee. Try not to hold it in.
*Drink water often
*Cranberry juice can help
Bear in mind, bacteria can spread from your anus, so make sure that's clean too, and wipe correctly (front to back)

Hopefully you won't have recurrent attacks and I hope you have a speedy recovery.

If that other person thinks they've been working in the medical field for 15 years and doesn't know bladder infections can be caused or encouraged by sex then I'm very glad I haven't encountered them when I've been ill.

Some people are more susseptable to bladder infections and the vigarous movement during sex can move around bacteria which can get into the urethra, causing the infection.

I've had some awful bladder infections spreading to kidneys and ended up in hospital etc and i know how much agony it is and things that I have found helpful while the antibiotics are taking their time to kick in is drinking a lot of cranberry juice (try to get the ones with least sugar so you don't mess up your teeth!). This has some antibacterial properties in it and calms the burning sensation. You can also get over the counter cystitis remedies which basically consist of a lot of salt which neutralises the acid in your pee which is causing it to burn.

Hot/warm baths are also very soothing, i know it sounds a bit icky but you can pee in the bath, it soothes the burning as you're peeing and the hot water soothes the pain in your stomach and back. Just remember to rinse off afterwards.

As for preventing future bladder infections, keep good hygene down there and try to go to the toilet after sex to wash away any bacteria that might be trying to spread into your bladder. Use lube and make sure he is keeping good hygene too.

Hope you feel better soon and remember, if you start getting pain at the sides of your lower back, you should go back to the doctor to check it hasn't spread to your kidneys.
