No motivation to study

Question Posted Sunday December 21 2008, 4:03 am

I'm extremely behind in my studies, my exams are just around the corner, and I don't have any motivation to study. I've tried many things to stay motivated , but nothing works.
I'm also extremely slow. When i have off, and do study, i wind up spending the whole day having studied just one lecture. With this rate , I'm not going to be able to pass the year. I've alreay lost many years due to switching majors, so I really don't need to lose anymore.
I think my problem is that anything ,and I mean anything distracts me. Say i'm studying. Then after a while, i'll stop studying and just stare at the page and re-read the lines over and over without actually absorbing what I've read. I even just stop studying for long periods of time so that I can sleep longer or eat more.
My questions are, what should I do to stay motivated to study ? What should I do to stop staring at the pages ? How can I quit getting distracted so easily and avoid sleeping so much?

Thanks for taking the time to read my question. Sorry if it's long.

i have the exact same problem. i know it is very hard to deal with, but it's possible. what i do to focus on what i'm reading and not just 'read' it without even thinking about it, is find something within the text that would interest you. no matter how boring it is, there is still something in there that could make you interested.read the first sentence and then say to yourself, hmm, i wonder what's going to happen now? or what's going to be next? then read the next line and try to interest yourself in the text, no matter how boring it is it is always possible to find SOMETHING in there that you will make you want to read even the slightest bit, because that's all you need. For example, (this might be stupid and not make sense, it's off the top of my head) if your studying for history, and the first line is: King Henry VII was born on June 23, 1495. Think to yourself, hmm, i wonder how long he lived and what he did his whole life? then continue reading and eventually you will forget that you were bored with it /not interested. also, no matter how long the text looks, don't get overwhelmed because everyone reads faster than they realize. hope i helped you, because i know EXACTLY what you are talking about!

Trust me, I am having the sammeeee problem, especially with only TWO days left of school before winter break, and these two days are going to be FILLED with tests! My advice to you is to reward yourself when you study, and study a little at a time. For example: set the rule and stick to it, if you want to go on the computer, or eat that chocolate chip cookie downstairs in your kitchen, tell yourself NOT until you study for say 15 minutes. If you actually study, then you can reward yourself with say 20 minutes of computer or going to eat that cookie. I like to make the deal with myself sweeter by saying if I study for 15 minutes, then I get a 25 minute break :-) Seriously do this. And to help you concentrate, find all the key points in the material you are studying, and write it down, this way you are reading all of the material, and you are getting into it. If you actually read the stuff that your looking at, instead of just looking at the words, it can actually be (somewhat) interesting. Also, I find it easier to actually comprehend what i am reading when I follow the lines with my pen, and read it semi-outloud (you know, when your lips are moving and just some of the sentence is coming out in a whisper from your mouth.) And after you read a chunk of a section or a paragraph or whatever it is, stop for a moment and think about what you just learned/read, do you remember it? this will help you be more aware of how your acting at that moment.
Good luck, i really hope this helps, because Im feeling the same pain you are haha, dont you just wish that you knew the whole book sor study guide sometimes? happy holidays, let me know how this works out for you! :-)
