What's a good digital camera?

Question Posted Sunday November 9 2008, 3:25 pm

My sister's birthday is in early December, and I want to start looking for her gift now. I know she really wants a digital camera, and it's kind of expensive, so I thought maybe I'd just count that as birthday & Christmas...

Anyway, what's a good digital camera (brand, I guess) to get? What makes it so good? What kind do you (or someone you know) have? Why that one? Why do you/they like it?
Also, do they have them in color? I thought I'd try finding one in her favorite color if I could.

One last question: is it okay to buy online, or would it be better to actually go to the store and pick it out so I can see it and talk to a sales rep? I'm a student at a college in a small town, so the closest thing to an electronic store we have is a wal-mart...

Thanks in advance! :)

Additional info, added Sunday November 9 2008, 3:30 pm:
Oh, and money isn't a big issue. I'd rather not spend more than $200 (unless it's not much more), but I don't really mind.
Links with pictures & info would be great if you can supply them!

Sanyo is a good brand and so is kodak. Yhey are both great. I dropped the sanyo and it is still great lighting and zoom. They have the sanyo, it is the cheapest sanyo at walmart and they only have it in muave-ish pinkish! The kodak is also from walmart, it is also the cheapest kodak, they have it in aqua and silver. If you have anymore questions email me at my email address which is posted on my column. Thank You, Emily!

I highly recommend Canon digital cameras- they have good features and excellent photo quality. I recommend anything in the "Canon Power Shot SD" line. There are new models out now, Canon power shot SD 550 is a bit more advanced than the SD 500 (more background options, better zoom). By now there are much newer models. I recommend the SD 550..

Canon makes great cameras- the quality of the photos, zoom/picture taking quality and clarity of photos are some things to look for, and a lot of people I know who have a canon digital camera are very happy with it.

One line of Canon digital cameras that comes in several colors, is the Power Shot SD 1100 IS:

Walmart does carry canon digital cameras online: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location), there is also an option of checking if they carry that particular item in the store near you. I would recommend buying directly from the store, so you can check out the camera and talk to a sales rep. I also recommend checking if walmart offers an insurance policy, in case of lost/damaged camera, which would cover replacement. Otherwise, you'd have to send the camera in for repair, which could be very expensive.
