so thers a theory that the world is gonna end on december 21, 2012. i know that the mayans predicted this, but how come people think its gonna end? they said its something about a winter solstice, but what does that mean?
can someone explain to me how the world is gonna end or why it is cause im curious about this.
WittyUsernameHere answered Thursday October 16 2008, 5:53 pm: People are stupid.
The mayan calendar indicates that December 12 2012 is the end of a cycle. What "the end of a cycle" means is a very debatable topic considering there isnt exactly a Mayan culture around to continue the predictions anymore.
Beyond that its just fear mongering. Anyone who says that they "know" when the world is going to end is lying. No one knows, and most everything people say in that regard is BS that they made up, or BS someone else made up that they bought into.
I could tell you the world will end tomorrow. If the world actually did end tomorrow, it wouldn't make me any less full of shit today.
People said that the world would end in 99. People said it in 2000. People said it in 01 and 03. People say it about 2012. I'm sure people said it about the year 1000 too way back when.
But, based on actual scientific evidence, the fact that the world is 4 billion years old, Earth will probably end when the sun goes nova.
Which is slated to happen sometime in the next 4-8 billion years? Been a while since I took a science class so I can't remember what that schedule is.

The Mayan's never said the world was going to end in 2012. They divided their calendar, which accounted for thousands of years of passing time, into epochs, based on the movement of Venus through the sky. In 2012, we enter a new epoch in the Mayan calendar, call the Fifth Sun or Fifth World, which is similar symbolically to say a new millennium or centaury in our calendar.
The Mayans were a superstitious people. They believed large changes would occur at the beginning of a new epoch, but NO WHERE AT ALL did they prophesize the end of the world.
You might also hear the Egyptians did… they didn’t. Like the Mayans they were watching the sky and paying attention to Venus, so their calendar also reflects the changes in Venus’s position in the sky.
The winter solstice is the day of the year were we have the fewest hours of day light and the longest night. It has absolutely nothing to do with the bogus ‘End of the World in 2012’ beliefs, people just throw it in trying to make their silly stories sounds more creditable by mentioning something that DOES actually happen each year.

Either way... Try not to worry too much about this. Remember the year 2000? So many people thought the world would end, and Y2K just compounded the panic. But after the countdown, we were all still here... And our computers worked just fine :D [ Missa8305's advice column | Ask Missa8305 A Question ]
pseudophun answered Thursday October 16 2008, 12:46 pm: The Mayan calendar predicted a lot of things and marked a lot of other things, for instance the sinking of Atlantis on August 12, 3113 BC. These events marked, supposedly, the beginnings and endings of different magical worlds. December 21, 2012 AD will mark the end of the fifth world and the beginning of the sixth world.
In general, no one really knows what will cause the end of the fifth world, as the calendar does not divulge such details, but regardless I don't think the Earth will explode or anything drastic like that. I'm praying it's not a Zombie Apocalypse. Those things scare the hell outta me. [ pseudophun's advice column | Ask pseudophun A Question ]
