First of all, exercise is really important. Something as simple as even walking for 30 minutes can be a huge benefit. If you like to run, running is awesome, and so is biking. Try to get at least 30-minute periods of exercise in a few times a week.
Next is the actual eating. I have learned something so important: LOOK AT THE CALORIES! This doesn't mean you have to go crazy with counting calories, but look at what is going to go into your body before you eat it. Also, pay attention to the serving size. For example, you might eat a bowl of Special K Cereal and think you are being healthy because it only has 100 or so calories, but you might pour yourself a large bowl of it. If you look at the box, a serving size is one cup (or around that). You need to make sure you are giving yourself the serving size and not a huge bowl. Do the same with the milk. If you drink coffee in the morning, don't go crazy with sugar and cream. I don't like my coffee black, so I just put some skim milk in it. Little things like this make a huge difference.
As far as meals go, try to eat more little meals throughout the day as opposed to the standard Americanized 3 huge meals. Here's an example of what I might eat in one day:
Breakfast: low-fat 100 calorie yogurt, cup of tea
Snack: walnuts and grapes or walnuts and raisins
Lunch: tuna sandwich and a few pretzels
Snack: veggies and a low-fat dip
Dinner: small portion of whole-wheat pasta, tomato sauce
And 2 more things:
1. It is okay to have sweets/junk food every once in a while! Just don't go crazy. If you totally take sweets out of your daily intake, one day you will BINGE. Trust me, I did this and one day I went to McDonalds and got a cheeseburger, fries, AND a chocolate shake. You don't want that to happen. So every once in a while it's okay to have a scoop of ice cream or a Kit-Kat bar. A little sweetness is good for you every so often!
2. Do not eat 3 hours before you go to sleep. One of the biggest mistakes people make is eating right before bed, which means those calories are sitting in your body turning into fat as you lie motionless sleeping. If you go to bed at 10, don't eat after 7, for example. THIS HELPS A LOT!
So, how do I know this? I have tried many, many different diets and none have worked. Once I learned to simply be smart and look at calories and eat healthfully I have lost a good amount of weight. Don't expect 10 pounds of weight loss in a week, because that wouldn't be healthy. It has been 2 months for me and I've lost 10 pounds. It makes you feel better too! Being healthy really is being happy. So be smart and good luck!! [ em279's advice column | Ask em279 A Question ]
