Well, if you take any self-defense course sooner or later you'll get punched or kicked. It won't be deliberate but you'll be sparring, kicking, punching, blocking and grappling. If you're scared to hit or get hit it's not right for you.

People miss with their shots all the time and you can/will get tagged. The object is to build defense tactics and learn this stuff that hopefully you'll never use. But of course, you knew that.

What would I recommend for you? If you learn wrestling or jiujitsu that would be good. You need to learn how to grapple and fight people off if they take you to the ground like most attackers.

Karate is also good for sparring, learning kicks, punching where you make little contact with anything other than the pads you are instructed to hit. You will punch, kick at others during sparring but will have padded protection and not be hitting to tag them but can get hit if you don't block. The object is in developing speed, accuracy etc. and not making contact with your classmate.

Definitely, if I were you I would go for juijitsu, wrestling, kickboxing or karate. I would stay away from Kung Fu as it's very disciplined and they want you to know stances, punches, kicks etc. exact once they are taught in most places where you train.

You also need to consider the cost. Usually it's around $1,000 annual for the programs or even more if they do it by a belt to belt program. If cost is an issue you can always buy a punching bag and set it up for yourself. Some programs allow you to pay in installments. Avoid anything taught in churches, community centers or parks and recreation courses as it's always low quality.
