Would it be safe to pierce my own ears? I have 8 holes already and have never had any problems with them, my ears are sensitive to piercings at all. Im just sick of spending so much money. What are the pros and cons, or some tips.
Additional info, added Sunday September 14 2008, 3:35 pm: sorry, i meant my ears ARENT sensitive to piercings.. Want to answer more questions in the Miscellaneous category? There are people who are trained to pierce your ear in a way that lowers your risk of infection. If at all possible, go to a place that uses needles instead of the gun. While the thought of a needle may sound gruesome, it's a lot safer and much less painful than the gun which can shatter cartilage and lead to keloids (really ugly, painful bumps). There are professional piercers for a reason, USE THEM.
You may see a cheap kit you can buy (I've seen PIERCING GUNS at Wal-Mart!) but you should not buy them.
1)You shouldn't pierce anything with a piercing gun.
2)You shouldn't pierce anything yourself unless you know what you're doing.
I know you may be spending more money, but it's safer.
Just go to a professional piercer, it's worth the money.
And I read one of the other answers saying "and they use a piercing gun" which isn't that great.
Piercing guns shouldn't be used, sure sometimes they work out fine.
But they can cause trauma, and have very high risk of infection.
To quote someone, "Guns are NOT autoclavable- therefore they can never be fully sterile."
And don't go to Claires, they aren't professional and shouldn't be piercing anyone anyways.
And they use piercing guns.
Go to an actual piercing shop, of course shop around and make sure the shop is clean and safe.
Of course, I'm sure you know about the cleaning and all that because you have 8 holes already.
So good luck. :) [ GhoulOnParade's advice column | Ask GhoulOnParade A Question ]

You would be better of going to Claire's or something- they pierce ears for free (not including the price of the earings). If you attempt to do it on your own, you'll risk a couple things: a)infection, or
b)possibly being too nervous to do a good job.
It's better to shop around and go to a professional, than to attempt to do it yourself. They are trained, and as you know, use a piercing gun, so there's little chance for them to make a mistake. Of course, make sure that the place you go to uses sterile materials and is completely sanitary. If you do decide to pierce your own ears, it would be a good idea to ask around, or even go to a tattoo/piercing place and see if they have any tips...it's better to ask a professional than to start from scratch. But anyway, I still recommend that you try going to Claire's or shop around and find a clean/licensed place that is relatively inexpensive. [ ciao77's advice column | Ask ciao77 A Question ]
