Housebreaking: puppy peeing

Question Posted Monday September 8 2008, 9:08 am

Female puppy, neutered, 15-16 weeks old. Mostly housebroken. 2nd floor apartment. Why does she (erratically) choose to pee inside? Two days ago, I walked her for 30 minutes, then she played 10 minutes in yard with her downstairs dog friend. They both charged upstairs and she peed once she arrived at the top. Yesterday, she dozed under the table while my wife and I played Monopoly. I went to the bathroom: she came in for a scratch & petting, then took 2 steps, squatted and peed. She had several outdoor opportunities while we played. What would make her want to do this?

When a female dog is "fixed" its called Spayed. Male dog "fixed" is neutered. :] And she shouldn't already be spayed, she needs to be atleast 6 months old to get spayed... thats weird... but she was probably too distracted to use the bathroom and puppies also have smaller bladders which means, they need to go out more. You need to start making a daily routine to take her outside and let her go to the bathroom, get her a kennel and when you both leave for work or whatever, put her in and leave her in there until you get home, then take her out. My dad's girlfriend's dog did that and she's 6 months old now and she hasn't had an accident in quite awhile... it also takes a lot of patience and time.

Hey there,
Your puppy is just at an age where she may be confused about where she is suppose to go or there may be a scent in the house which makes her want to mark her territory, and if you dont clean ALL the places where she pees in the house with disinfectant she is just going where her scent is. The next time she pees in the house, soak it into some newspaper, clean the spot well, and then put the newspaper outside where you wish for her to pee. The scent will encourage her to pee there. With my puppy, I just told her to go pee when we were outside and waited until she did. If you want her to go in a certain area you could have her on a leash until she does. Say the command and wait. Now, my pup knows that when I say "go pee" outside, she has to go before I let her in.
Hope I helped, Good Luck :)

Sorry I don't have time for a more ellaborate answer but it's most likely because the whole time she was out she was too distracted to used the bathroom.

Use the same walking path every time you take her out, that way she's not overwhelmed by new scenery. And also, if she hasn't done her business yet, don't let her play outside. Or at least if you do, make sure you stay after playing long enough to pee. If she has the choice between going to the bathroom and playing with another dog outside, then peeings gonna sound pretty boring.

Don't give her the opportunity to pee in the house, make absolutely positive that she's gone BEFORE you bring her back in.

I hope this helps and sorry it's not very detailed I'm kind of in a hurry. :) Good luck.
