Hey there.

Ok starting with the sugar free stuff. Within reason I dont think even the most hardcore opponents of artificial sweetners would tell you to stay away from gum and mints. So yes, it should be fine.

The main issue with these things is what the columnist below said. Studies have shown that overall, people who use artificial sweetner tend to gain weight. Now, these are broad studies, which include sedentary people. What I am trying to get at is that while it is ok, keep it in moderation because it does have some sort of mild impact on your weight (not through calories but maybe by affecting your other eating patterns/ cravings).

If you eat very little of anything but burn more calories you will lose weight. The answer to your second question is again, true. However that does not necessarily mean that you will be as healthy as you can be; that you will have as good energy levels as you could have; or that you will be creating a proper sustainable diet plan that will ensure that you do not regain your lost weight.

Indulgences are fine, here and there. Overall however I would urge anyone to try to strive towards a sustainable balanced diet. Not doind so leads to the classic seesaw effect, where people lose weight only to regain it later.

Good luck.

I'm sure that sugarfree mints/gum won't make you gain weight or anything but, I dunno about you, but they make me feel hungrier.

About the "eating whatever you want" it's kindof true but kindof not true. You can't just eat cake and french fries in small amounts and still expect to lose weight it's just not gonna happen. Now it is true that everything is good in moderation, but it depends on what you eat small amounts of. If you eat healthy things and treat yourself to a cookie or two or a small slice of cake, there's no harm in it. But if you just eat mostly junk, in small amounts, it still adds up.

The best thing when losing weight and working out, is too eat a lot of healthy food. There's no point in eating less, because you end up either withering away or gaining all of the weight back really quick. If you eat nothing and then have a cookie, you are totally gonna gain weight. Where as if you ate healthy food all day like.. a bowl of raisin bran crunch for breakfast with oj, a tuna sandwich with celery and milk for lunch, and a slice of meatloaf for dinner with milk and peas, and THEN you eat a cookie-you aren't going to gain any weight from the cookie because the other food weighs the small cookie out and you end up looking healthy and losing weight-with work outs of course which I see you are already doing, so good job :D
