Ferrets

Question Posted Saturday August 30 2008, 3:38 pm

alright, i need major help. i want a ferret so, so bad. but my parents say NO. i need your help to persuade them to say YES. i need to make them see my side of the story. their side is my older step-brother had a ferret and it stunk really bad and he left it with his parents when he went to college. and they say he only got a ferret because they didnt know what ferrets were like, but now that they had one... you know they dont want another in this house. but i think i can take better care of my ferret and keep the smell down. and our parents were also upset about the ferret tearing up the couch and ruining the carpet. but i told her i would keep it in its cage most the time, and keep an eye on it when i let him out. plus i said id keep it in my room.
i got a dog once, and i didnt completely keep my word about taking care of it because my parents took over that job for me, they didnt even give me a chance to take care of it myself, they automatically fed it and everything.
so it's hard to persuade my parents, they really dont negotiate very much. and they feel very strongly about this ferret thing. so i need your help to help them see my side and persuade them into saying freakin YES.

Hello. I have 4 ferrets, and I can tell you that having 4 is a lot of work. I would recommend if you get one, it should be a baby, so both of you are starting off together. They smell, they will always smell, the more you bath the worse they smell actually. When you bath them that makes more of there stinky oil come to the surface. I have a fan in my window that I have going 24/7, it definitely helps. I would also get him/her a cage that they can live in forever, so bigger so you don't have to change it later down the road. I would forget the harness and leash, it will just get you frustrated, they simply will pull and try to get away. Get a giant dog pen for your backyard and play with them outside like that. We actually bring ours to the beach in a cat carrier. They run free and really just want to stay close and dig in the sand (that's were getting them as a baby helps,he won't want to leave you). If they get scared they run right into the carrier.
They are a huge responsibility and need attention daily, they are not like a hamster, they will die from loneliness, they need interaction. If you clean there cage everyday or every other day it will keep the smell down. Fresh water fresh food, and a clean litter box is all you can do. I would highly recommend a "ferret nation cage" they are pricey but you will never have to get one again. Do a few other things around the house to show them you are responsible and tell them you will help around the house to earn money to take care of him/her. P.S. you must "ferret proof" your room or house they will get into everything and I mean everything. And you can't keep them in there cage all the time, they need to be let out daily for exercise. Hope this helps...gotta run and let them out to play!!

Well most people will tell you get the ferret descented, dont. Its a waste of money. Their scent is because there skin has a natural oil in it, they will still have their distinct scent. On the other hand ferrets can be bathed twice a week to keep the smell down. Tell your parents you will buy him a harness and leash, those are neat for ferrets. Ferrets are kind of low maintenance animals, keep their cage cleaned and fresh food and water. Just keep telling them you're responsible enough and really think you deserve a chance with a ferret.

I think you could prove to her that you can be responsible and care for a pet. and just letting you know that i have a ferret and it does stink a lot no matter how much you bath it or if you clean the cage everyday and it did tear up my things and the carpet and couch. So just letting you know. and also they have to be out at least six hours a day or else they get depressed and die. Just tell your mom how you can prove to her that you'll be responsible. Hope i helped. Let me know how it goes.
