Losing weight.

Question Posted Monday August 25 2008, 4:03 am

Okay so i'm overweight not on the brink of obesity but enough to want to lose some kilo's.

I looked up some fitness videos on youtube which have helped me become more fit and are a good way for me to excercise (especially since i cant really afford a gym membership or anything like that at this moment)

The thing is, i mostly want to lose weight from my stomach area.

I know when you start losing weight you lose it from the areas you don't want to lose it (i.e breasts) but i was wondering that apart from doing sit ups are there any other ways to help me lose weight from my stomach in particular?

And if there is any really good fitness DVD's i could check out it would be helpful along with any other helpful tips.

Thanks!

I read the first answer, and I have a number of comments.

1. First and most important (and I cant say this enough), fat loss cannot be spot reduced. I.e. you cannot target through exercise from where the fat is lost. Sit ups/ crunches/ Swiss balls/ etc all work to train the muscle. The muscle does not own the fat around it, so the only contribution to weight loss that these exercises have is through the calories they burn (which are very very little compared to cardiovascular workouts and sports).

2. Sit ups are not a great way to train the abs, regardless of how you do them. Crunches and other exercises are more effective at targetting the right muscles.

3. Fitness videos can be a good tool to lose weight, as is any cardio work such as running, biking, etc. For best results do fasted cardio, i.e. in the morning before breakfast. This will target the fat stores directly. Just keep the intensity fairly low.

4. I am sure you know this, but your diet will make or break your efforts. Rather than seek out the mythical negative calorie foods, just focus on a sensible balanced diet consisting of wholesome unprocessed foods. Also minimise intake of saturated fats and anything that has sugar added to it.

I am sorry there is no way to achieve your main goal specifically, but this is the way the human body works. Genetics will determine if the weight loss will emphasise one area over another. Anything else is just a myth.

Good luck.

EDIT: You stated "The thing is, i mostly want to lose weight from my stomach area."

and

"but i was wondering that apart from doing sit ups are there any other ways to help me lose weight from my stomach in particular?"

That implies that you DO think you can lose weight through spot reduction (hence any OTHER ways to help me lose weight from my stomach). I just pointed out that sit ups or any other exercise dont do this.

No matter how you twist and turn this that was the MAIN question you asked, and then you added a couple of extras at the end. I answered your main question as best as is possible, and I also gave you "other helpful tips". And by the way, a 1 rating is for abusive answers. Do you think I have been abusive?

Sit-ups are actually bad for you, I hope you know this. They can pull muscles in your back and neck and actually have a reverse effect on your stomach, making it look bulkier than it is!

The apparent "wonder tool" of stomach toning is the Swiss ball, (you know, those huge inflatable rubber ones.) and there are many exercises that can be done using them. Fitness experts advise that when working out your stomach, it's good to start with the weakest areas first, like the obliques. Obliques are the muscles running from your hips up to your ribs.

Also! Try looking up reverse calorie foods. A reverse calorie food is a food your body burns more calories to digest then what the food is worth.

Hope I helped!
