My dog is sick! I need emergency help!

Question Posted Friday August 22 2008, 7:44 pm

I have an Australian Shepherd. Female/almost 3 years old/no history of illnesses.

I got home today and found yellowish dried vomit in three separate sections on the house. An hour later she threw up two more times. She's moping around. Her nose is cold and wet, which is good, but the inside of her ears are cold.

Please don't answer this with "Ask a vet" or "look up advice online." That doesn't help. If you have a link to a website with advice though, that will help.

Please help!

First of all, when an at mal's (dog or cat's) nose is cold, hot, wet, dry, doesn't mean the sick in any way (in fact, this is normal). Same goes with the ears. (If you want to check a dog's temperature, a rectal thermometer does the trick. A normal temp is 100-101 degrees Fahrenheit.)

The vomiting isn't so normal. Is she drinking water? If you see that she isn't, take her to a vet, because if she's dehydrated she will need to be put on fluids. I would take away her food for a day or so to give her stomach a rest. But if she is vomiting continuously for the next 24 hours, I would take her to a vet ASAP.

If money is the issue here, an exam isn't really that expensive. Where I work we charge forty dollars for an exam, not including what the doctor may decide to prescribe.

One of my dogs went through something similar to this. On top of the throwing up and moping around, my dog also did not eat. How is your dogs appetite? After a few days of this odd behavior, we found out that he had eaten part of a rubber toy, and it was stuck inside him. Honestly, I'm not a vet, nor is anyone else on this website! If I were you, I'd give it a day or two and see if she improves. If there is no sign of improvement or it even gets worse, I definietly recomend having her looked at by a vet. Just keep an eye on her and make note of every weird behavior she might encounter. Sorry I don't have any definite answers but no one will on this website. You can try this website if you would like but you know what is best for your dog so keep an eye on her.

Hope that helps! Good luck and I hope your dog feels better.

Could be a substance called bile. It a digestive fluid produced by the gall bladder and the stomach can collect excessive amounts of it causing vomiting, upset stomach and stomach ulcers. The color of it can range from deep yellow to the color of mountain dew.

I advice you too see the vet, Sorry you didn't want to hear it but please I don't want your dog to get worse...
