Trying to find it would be a good place to start. I don't know if they still do this, but you could phone your local radio station and see if they could make a lost pet announcement free of charge. Some used to do that, and sometimes it helps. ]
1) put posters up with pictures of your cat on it at local vets shooping centers, and other places people go you never know someone may have found him.
2)Its better to keep pets like cats inside as a indoor cat and taking them outside on a leish if they are not to afraid.
3) try and be more carful by making sure doors are closed. ]
Instead of trying to just "get over it," I would go try & find your cat. Put up signs, put ads in the newspaper, maybe even have them broadcast it on the news (yes, some people really do that).
I would give it a while. If no one replies to your ads or signs, I would try to move on, but still keep a little bit of hope. Just try hard to find your cat before you completely give up on this.
This is your pet. I'm sure you wouldn't just "get over it" if this was family, so why when it comes to your pet is it any different? ]
I would really first try finding your cat. Put up signs, and look around nearby.
They actually say cats have a sense of where their home is. Most instances they'll come back soon if they're in need of water or food. This is true. My old cat was an outdoor cat, and she would remember where she lived and came back. How else would you think they'd come back?
An indoor cat is a bit different but they still have an idea of where they live.

Both answered. You'd be surprised what cats are capable of.
Within a week or two, I would go to a pet shelter/SPCA to see if they have your cat.
If it's been a few months, your cat is likely gone.. from unfortunate events that happen to runaway pets.
If no luck, you can always seek a close friend or relative for advice on the grieving and mourning process. ]
Have you tried actually LOOKING for your cat? Like, have you put up signs and stuff?
That's probably a start.
Other than that, try this:
